My brother and I were really into bushwalking! From a very young age, we'd disappear for the whole day. No drink bottle. No snacks. We'd eat wild raspberries along the way, and collect several buckets full of wild blackberries and mushrooms to take home to Mum. The only rule was that we had to be home before dark. And we always were, often going to great pains to entice an abandoned puppy or kitten to follow us all of the way home. Sadly Mum never let us keep any of them. As a child, I never wondered what happened to all of the strays we had lured home, but I take comfort in knowing now that they did not suffer long from slowly starving to death, even if my brother and I never knew the joy of growing up with a domestic pet...
