The legend of legends.

In all of PnF’s written history and beyond, stories were told of the fabled dragons who rode the winds and lived in great cities in the sky, appearing only rarely to seek out those they would choose as dragon keepers. The dragon keepers were young pets who showed the greatest bravery in the face of greatest adversity. Taken on the backs of the mammoth dragons, they would fly past the clouds into cities of pearl and gold, filled with all the wonderment anyone could ever dream up. Riches would be brought back to PnF, bestowed upon the keepers’ families, with a promise from their loved ones that they were as happy as they could have ever imagined. Among the treasures brought back were the Dragonscale gems, iridescent stones that captured the breathtaking array of colors that shimmered in a dragon’s wings, found nowhere else in all of PnF’s vast lands.

There once lived a very high falootin’ duck called Lady Duck. Now, Lady Duck was no Lady, just a lady, but she had high hopes of reaching that esteemed elevation in time. How, you might ask? Well, she had her sights set on one Lord Englebert Pettimore III. Was Lord Englebert Pettimore III a Lord? Not quite, as he was only a Lord by way of his mother who had also once dreamed of a higher station in life. You can imagine the conversations. Well, Lady Duck never got her Lord, but she did get one Fred Eggstair, a local Rhode Island Red. Lady Duck liked gems and well, Fred saved his whole life trying to buy her the biggest and best. In fact, Fred cockadoodle-dooed so much for extra pay that he went hoarse early on and never worked again, but he did, by way of his part-time job as crossing guard 2 at the local elementary, earn a fine fuschia stickpin for his going away gift. You guessed it, Fred had it made into a pendant for Lady Duck, who wore that fuschia gem every day, rain or shine, muddy or clear waters and they were happy all the rest of their days.

Did you know some believe that far back in the ancient lands, the famed beauty, Cleopetra wore peridots as her signature gem? It’s true. Like the diamond, the peridot grows deepest in PnF’s vast lands and is only brought to the surface for discovery by the rumbling, rolling, shifting plates below, jolted by underground volcanic activity. Peridots are mainly found on a very tiny, out of the way island, by the name of Peridota. Prized and coveted, it’s no wonder such a fierce beauty would claim the gem as her own. Will you?

Pet’artica, a frozen snow-covered land that only the heartiest pet can survive. Out there, twilight is a constant and both predator and prey hone their senses and their might to survive the eternal winter. Deep in the coal black caves, a gem lays unseen from all but the most determined explorer, bits of stone that perfectly capture the startling blue-green of the frozen tundra’s icy land flows, miles thick the ice is often a snapshot of life on the tundra over the ages, holding pets caught unawares for all time. For the luckiest few, the Tundra Gem is a priceless keepsake.

The smoky quartz was first discovered by PnF ancients long ago. Buried deep in the richest earth, this gorgeous stone varies in shades of lightest amber to shining mahogany. The rich-cinnamon hue modern pets favor today carries with it the promise of protection against bad deeds as well as healing through meditation, and is used as decoration in everything from jewelry to masonry works.

Long ago a young mink was forced to say fare thee well to her true love. As he prepared to leave her, sailing away into the night to make his fortune, their fortune, he gave to her a glowing stone of perfect milky white, suspended from a shining chain.

“Wear this small token, my love, a piece of the moon I’ve captured just for you. Know that as these long days stretch into longer nights, we are always looking up into the same eternal light. We will always be together.”

The young mink waited for her love with hope in her heart, wearing the Celestine gem around her neck each day and gazing upon the moon each night, counting the days until their reunion. But, as sometimes happens, the young sea-faring pet did not return, lost to the sea and the ages. His love never married.

Instead it was said, before and long after her time in PnF Land, one could see her on the highest hill, still gazing up to the moon, the Celestine gem aglow upon her chest, lit with the light of eternal love and they whisper still that should you find a Celestine gem, your love will never falter.

It’s forged in the harshest elements and often mined from stone that isn’t half as interesting as the treasure it hides. That’s why this gem is favored by pet friends everywhere as a token of affection. Pink is the epitome of don’t judge a gem by its color. Enduring, invincible, and oh so pretty, it’s the sweetest and most lasting way for a pet to tell someone, “Thank you for being a friend.”

Every year on the largest of the P’waii Islands, islanders gather from all over to dance at the foot of Mount Fury, a colossal volcano that much like a clock, begins to steam and breathe its flaky gray ash just after summer’s heat has subsided into the cool awakening of fall. Great feasts are enjoyed and the drums beat long into the nights and on the last evening, the pinnacle night, Mount Fury throws into the night sky tiny chunks of molten lava. As bits of fire rain overhead, the islanders’ dive into the waves, seeking out those pieces of stone that are cooled by the oceans kiss and turned into a prized gem. The Firestone Gem, once polished, captures the hue of lava at its most beautiful, a perfect red-orange treasure.

There’s a monster in the sea, they said, a monster in the sea. There’s a nightmare down below, they said, a nightmare where down you go. And the sea foams greatly now, his tentacles are thrashing. And the sea foams wildly now, where the waves are loudly crashing.

Oh hush now, hush now, can’t you see, the giant dances in the sea, he’s dancing just for you … he’s dancing just for me. He’s big and wily, a giant in the deep, he’s a poet in motion, his silent song can make you weep.

There once into the world came, a pet most pure and true, and though she remained but a while, her spirt lives … in each of you. A spirit unblemished, without reproach, remains a vow, to live in love, the here and now. For the Angelite Gem gives to you - love, healing, and protection … an eternal promise of affection.

Long ago when PnF was little more than wild woods, pets began to appear, following stories and promises of ‘gold in the hills’. They came by the thousands, seeking their fortunes, putting down roots, discovering more than they ever dreamed, prospering. Some miners chased the golden stones long after they had been emptied from their hiding places. These pets, they say, spent their lives alone in the highest hills, chasing this glowing yellow-gold gem, seeking their longed-for fortune, until they existed only as stories, sometimes funny, sad, inspiring, and more, passed down through the centuries. And that is how this stone became known as the Miner’s Folly.

Everyone in PnF knows of our beloved Scared Black Cat. Unlike his rather sarcastic brother, Mean Black Cat, Scared Black Cat is afraid of absolutely everything! It came to be when he was young that a few naughty pets liked to tease him with the ‘Got your nose!’ game.

For the longest time, poor Scared Black Cat was certain they had truly gotten his little black, glossy nose and stolen it away! He was truly a sight to see yowling and rolling around, holding his noseless nose until he realized it had never been gone. Those naughty, but never truly bad, pets would laugh at the “scaredy cat.”

This continued on for quite some time until one day, a particularly naughty pet ‘stole’ Scared Black Cat’s nose and realized with horror that in his hand he held something cold and black. That clever cat had painted a smooth, round, rock, blackest black! Never again could they tease him and get away with it!

This is how when long years later a glossy black stone was first found in the great tarry swamps of Troll Land, that one of those naughty pets, who had since grown up to be a famous archaeologist, had the pleasure, with a twinkle in his eye, of naming the new gem Scaredy Cat’s Nose.

Once, long, long ago in PnF Land there lived a tribe of Ogres among the sweet and good-natured pets. The Ogres were nice enough though, if just a little grumpy by nature. But, one bitter winter’s day, one Ogre, a particularly nice Ogre at that, was left heartbroken when a sharp-eyed vulture made off with his only company, a small brown lab, who answered to the name of Oaf. Angry and hopeless after days of search, the Ogre decided if he could not feel happiness of any kind, nobody would ever again.

The Ogre stole all the beloved pets throughout PnF Land, his most prized capture the rare and otherworldly beautiful unicorn called Wishes. Each night, the Ogre would sit in the barn, fiercely guarding the pets he had claimed, to hide his grief. But, having them, even the graceful and sweet tempered Wishes, did not ease his suffering. It was one such night that the Ogre was crying monstrously loud that he felt a soft plop upon his arm and then another upon his shoulder. He was amazed to see through his terrible anguish, the small gems that were collecting around him. They were the palest violet and glowed with a satiny sheen.

The Ogre looked up to find that Wishes had come to stand at his back, her head poking through the slats of the iron bars holding her prisoner. And, the Ogre watched with amazement as three more gems slid from the unicorn’s damp eyes. The unicorn’s tears. He didn’t know why, but those precious tears filled him with a peace he’d not known since he had lost Oaf. He made up his mind that night to return all of the pets, even Wishes.

When at last the Ogre returned Wishes to her proper home, she whinnied softly and lay her head to his arm, as if to tell him thank you. He watched from afar as Wishes was reunited with her family and then prepared to go back to his own home, even though it might be empty without Oaf.

But, it was then that the Ogre felt something wet flick against his toes and with a gasp he looked down to see the tiniest chocolaty brown puppy, a tumbling ball of fur, eagerly hoping for his attention. He scooped the small bundle up and looked around, seeing no one to claim her. He only saw, from a distance, Wishes standing at her gate, looking his way. He knew without a doubt, somehow, some way, she had granted him his deepest wish, a friend to heal his heart, fill the loneliness. And so the bundle of puppy became Fluff and the small unicorn’s tears were kept, treasured, for all of the Ogre’s days, a reminder that sometimes wishes do come true.

Love, liefde, amor, laska, amastus, pag-ibig, rakkaus, liebe, szerelem, ast, cinta, gra, kjaerlighet. No matter how you say it, love is that elusive feeling that all pets crave. From the love of a mother to the breathtaking romance of a first love, to the enduring love of two souls reuniting, love is a celebration of life and there’s just no other color that calls out love like the deep, rich red of a rose. The C’est L’amour Gem perfectly captures the red of a newly opened bloom, eternal.

The great leonine painter, Leosnarldo D’getchu, once said that painting the sunset of a vast savannah was where he felt most at peace. With the wild world around him, he could sit for hours, mixing his paints to capture the perfect nuance of that one-of-a-kind burning orange shade. In fact, it’s fitting that the Savannah Sunset Gem should only be found where the heat scorches the earth and the wildlife roars and romps, careens and keens, awaiting the adventurer who will find it beneath the tall, golden-glowing grasses.

Legend has it that each Sun Drop Gem is the tiny bead of twinkling light that that a sunbeam carries down to the water. And, as the moon rises, the night winds come in their rippling currents and gather up the precious drops of sun, carrying them away to the highest mountaintops, dropping them deep into caverns where the dark craves the light. It is only the luckiest of pets who can stumble across these precious stones and carry them back out to the grateful sunlit day once more.

Did you know green is a trolls favorite color? Not just any green, the greenest green, vermarine green. That’s why trolls guard the vermarine quartz mines and are most reluctant to share. To be given a gift of vermarine quartz from a troll means he holds you in the highest esteem, or he just really wants whatever he’s trading it for, but let’s stick with high esteem. The trolls are just a little bit colorblind, you see. That’s why so many of them don’t match. I bet you’ve noticed that already, right? Oh, haven’t seen one up close to know? Take our word for it, trolls are a walking billboard for fashion don’t. But, they can see green, every shade of green, and vermarine quartz is the greenest green and they would know, of course. So, even if you love green and you love quartz, best be careful about how you come by your next piece of vermarine quartz. The trolls remember every piece.

Pets with a heart for adventure, to explore and see the world in all of its shapes and sizes, scorching heat to sub-zero freezes, highest peaks to the deepest depths of oceans, might just find their reward at the bottom of the Underwater Trench, sinking until the sun’s light no longer filters quite so readily through the endless expanse of rolling blue. At just that very point, there is a blue water so intoxicating that many a diver has claimed to want to stay forever. That deep blue is captured in the vivid hues of the Deep Blue Gem, a stone for anyone who craves something less traditional or for the explorer who longs to keep a tangible piece of the deep blue he or she carries long after the salt-sea smell of the ocean has left the air. A one-of-kind stone treasure to complete any collection.

In the rolling cocoa-dusted hills of Chocolate Land, a pet, we’ll call him ‘famed pastry-chef Jaques Petsloe’, has discovered the most exquisite pieces of marbleized fudge. Hidden deep inside carefully carved dark chocolate walls, these perfectly formed gems will make your mouth water for one tantalizing drop of rich, tongue tingling chocolate. Mmm…

But, it’s best to wear this chocolate drop on a chain.

Let me tell you a story, it’s a short story, and won’t take very long. There’s this dragonfly by the name of Joy and boy Oh boy does Joy bring…well…JOY! One day the intrepid local reporter wanted to interview Joy, ask her where she came up with all that good cheer – was it sunbeams? Was it six Zipping Zingers a day?

Joy laughed and laughed and said, “Oh no! It’s not those things, well, it is those things, but not my favorite things. My favorite things are the purple rocks!”

“The purple rocks?” The reported asked, very confused, for he knew of no purple rocks in all of PnF Land.

“Sure! I’ll show you.” And she flew. And, he followed, glad the tank on his wingpack was full.

She chattered on, “Wait until you see them. They’re just over the Summer Hill, where the land meets the sea, on a stretch of the prettiest violet sands. Mama said once, ‘those rocks just like Joy’s Eyes!’ when I showed the family!” (Do you see that Joy is also Quite the talker?!) She explained, “So many think that my eyes are black, but really they’re purple, they just need a little bit of sunshine to light them up! And, don’t we all? That’s all we need, a little bit of sunshine!”

And lo’ and behold on that day, on that hidden violet-sand beach, the Joy’s Eye Gem was ‘discovered’, in piles and strips of glowing deep purple beauty, as abundant and beautiful as Joy’s JOY in giving.

You've never seen anything quite like me before, have you? This is because I'm unique to Pets'n'Friends. You won't find me anywhere else, and even here I'm fabulously rare.

I'm a jasper, the most common precious stone in the currency range, but not the least beautiful. Even though I do say so myself!

I'm a lustrous blue sapphire, cabochon cut. I do have a few visible inclusions, but they just give me character, don't you think?

I'm a smooth pale grey chalcedony, one of the many forms of agate. I'd quite like to be in a pendant one day.

I'm an emerald. Here's something I bet you didn't know about me: the Emperor Nero was short-sighted, so he used one of my relatives as a lens to watch the gladiators. I wonder if he thought all gladiators were green?

There are many different types of onyx, but I'm the black one - cool and sophisticated. You'll often find me in men's signet rings.

No, I'm not a ruby, though I'm often mistaken for one. I'm a carnelian. Don't you think I'm handsome?

I'm a beautiful leaf-green peridot. Lighter and yellower in tone than the emerald, I like to remind people of the springtime.

You may have met my cousin, the golden yellow beryl. I don't look quite so dramatic, but I'm still well worth adding to your collection.

I'm a beryl, the same chemical composition as an emerald but a lovely golden yellow. An unusual gem, you don't often see me in jewellery. I wonder why not?

I'm a topaz. My relatives come in a whole spectrum of colours, from browns, oranges and yellows to hot pinks. I'm one of the more unusual ones in that I am a lovely pale grey with barely a hint of yellow.

I'm a turquoise, and what I may lack in transparency I make up in smoothness and lustre. Please don't confuse me with a push button - I'm much prettier than that!

I'm a jacinth, and I can be found in several different shades in the red/orange part of the spectrum. Did you know that my name is related to the word 'hyacinth'? I don't understand that. I mean, do I look like a hyacinth to you?

I'm an amethyst, one of the most valuable of the semi-precious stones. As you see, I'm transparent and richly coloured, but some of my relatives have quartzy white inclusions. It doesn't matter. Frankly we're all gorgeous, darlings!

I am a most excellent piece of jade all the way from China. As the Chinese discovered many hundreds of years ago, I am not only beautiful but useful; I can be made into vases, fans and other items, not just jewellery.

I'm an opal. In Shakespeare's time I was considered unlucky, a symbol of inconstancy, because of the way my colours change at different angles. Actually, though, I'm a friendly little gem who likes nothing better than to delight you with my subtly pretty colours.

I am malachite, a form of copper ore; it is the copper that gives me my distinctive green colour (just like Mr Spock's blood). If you like, I can go into a long technical explanation about how my beautiful bands form. Yes, I'm jewellery for geeks and very proud of it!

There's only one place in the world you'll find me, and that is Derbyshire in England (where I am quite plentiful). I'm often banded with yellow, hence my name; it comes from the French 'bleu jaune', meaning 'blue yellow'.

I'm azurite, one of the more unusual semi-precious stones. I'll even double as a planet for you, just in case you don't have enough to choose from!

I'm iolite, a beautiful dark blue gem. Don't you think I would look good alternated with sapphires in a necklace?

Most gemstones are formed by heat and pressure, but not me. I'm amber, the laid-back one of the bunch. Know what I am? Yup, fossilised pine resin. How cool is that? Sometimes I even contain perfectly preserved fossil insects. So don't believe them if they tell you that you have to go through a lot of stress to shine.
