On a slightly more serious note, all sorts of gadgets and devices are powered these days using magnets made from rare earth metals. These metals are being utilised increasingly in very high-tech systems and their success brings a boost to the economy. Rare earth magnets are made from the elements neodymium, iron and boron and so are known as NdFeB magnets. NdFeB magnets are the strongest magnets you can get (except for superconducting magnets). Rare earth metals are now utilised to improve the efficiency and performance of numerous technologies, including the magnetic technologies that power hybrid and electric vehicles, aircraft controls, loudspeakers, mobile phones, wind turbines, loudspeakers, factory automation equipment and robots! Rare earth metals have enabled the miniaturisation of all of these systems, making smaller, more compact components.

With offshore islands that are practically a stone's throw from Russia, Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan's main islands. It has areas of wilderness with wild bears, and is home to Japan's indigenous population of the Ainu, The quantity and quality of snow makes Hokkaido a very popular destination for skiers in the winter, and summer sees an influx of people from the other islands of Japan as the qir quality on Hokkaido is excellent.

Kyushu is the third largest island in Japan. It has all kinds of attractions, from active volcanoes to calm beaches. The volcanic activity has created the ideal territory for hot springs, called onsen in Japanese, which are very popular. Other attractions range from its striking mountains to tonkotsu ramen!

Shikoku is the smallest of Japan's main islands but there is a lot to do there. The temple at Ryozenji, in TokushimaIt is stage one in the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgramage. The island is famed for its hot springs, the Dogo Onsen, Kochi Castle, with its original keep, it has a summer dance festival attracting an international audience and last but not least, a visitor to Shikoku should be sure to sample the delicious udon noodles!

Honshu is the main island of Japan, being the largest and most populated of the islands. It is home to the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and also Mt Fuji. There is something for everypet in Honshu, from hot springs and spiritual temples to the vibrant nightlife of Tokyo!

Australia's Aboriginal flag is one of three official Australian flags. Its background is black for the aboriginal people and red for the red earth and ochre used in traditional ceremonies, with the sun in the foreground.

Like many Commonwealth countries, Australia's flag depicts the Union Jack. The large Commonwealth Star beneath the Union Jack represents the Australian States and Territories, and the Southern Cross refers to Australia's geographical location.

Ever since candles were invented by the Romans in 500 BC, candles have been a part of celebrations and life in general. The Turkish flag consists of a red field with a white crescent moon and five-pointed star placed slightly off-centre. The design derives from the original Ottoman flag dating from the 1700s. When the Republic of Turkey was established in 1923, it took as its flag that which was used by the Ottoman Empire. During the dozen subsequent years, various refinements were made to the flag, for example, the specific shade of vivid red that was to be used. The present flag design was first approved in 1936.

A highly visible red boat rests on one of the many shores in the Faroe Islands. It could belong to a fisherperson or just a quick way to get around instead of travelling overland. Fishing is the main industry accounting for 96 percent of goods exported.

Canada is a vast country with a huge amount to offer. Ontario is known for its forests, wildernesses and abundant wildlife, yet 40% of the population lives here. The capital, Ottawa, is modern and multicultural, as is Toronto, which is not far from Niagara Falls and the USA border. Quebec has a predominantly French-speaking community but a good proportion of inhabitants are of Irish descent. Quebec City, the capital of Quebec, has an old-world European charm, as does Montreal. Three-quarters of the world's maple syrup is produced in Quebec! British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, has immense mountains, deep forests and dramatic coastlines, and Vancouver is a delight. Alberta: three words--Banff National Park! See the amazing Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. Then Saskatchewan, where you can enjoy unique landscapes with road trips, hiking, enjoying incredible sunsets and sunrises and abundant wildlife. Polar bear safaris can be undertaken in Manitoba, or how about a trip to the Royal Canadian Mint? Then there's Newfoundland and Labrador: "Anything but Ordinary"! How about a spot of whale-watching or iceberg-viewing? The Maritime provinces are the furthest east, consisting of New Brunswick (apple-picking, leaf-peeping, motorcycle routes); Nova Scotia (sailing trips, lighthouse-spotting) and Prince Edward Island (golfing, fishing, farming communities). Then to the north are the three Canadian territories. The Yukon offers experiences from the aurora borealis to beer festivals! The Northwest Territories is the dream place for anyone fond of the outdoors. Then Nunavut, where you can experience dog-sledding, snowmobiling and kayaking!

The flag of Canada, adopted in 1965, is unofficially called Maple Leaf l’Unifolié (French for “the one-leafed”). More than 5000 designs were submitted before George Stanley’s maple leaf flag was picked. The maple leaf was first used in 1868 as a national symbol. During the First and Second World Wars, the badges of the Canadian forces were often based on a maple leaf design.

Peeking from backstage you watch as the seats of the theatre slowly fill. Your nerves jumble, making your legs feel like jelly. Yet the moment the curtain rises you're composed, ready to show all the attending pets what you've got.

The poppy can have many symbolic meanings in different cultures, for example, restful sleep and recovery. For others, it is a cheery harbinger of summer because of its size and intense colors. On this island there is a huge swathe of red poppies, providing a feast for the eyes and senses.
