It symbolises patriotic sacrifice in the eyes of many Americans and most Texans. It was a battle in which Texans were heavily outnumbered by Mexicans.

This canyon is a State Park 60 miles long and 800 feet deep. Located in the "pan handle" of Texas, it is a popular scenic location for hiking, fishing, bird watching and mountain biking.

A colony of prairie dogs was established one hundred years ago in Mackenzie Park, Lubbock. You can enjoy watching the critters play and eat -- you won't have seen so many of them together before! Prairie dogs belong to the Scuiridae (squirrel) family. Their other biological relatives include groundhogs, chipmunks, marmots and woodchucks.

In the early 1800s, entire sections of old maps of Texas bore labels such as “Wild Horse Desert”. These tracts of land were home to herds of wild horses in numbers estimated to be close to 1 million. The amount of horses now is a tiny fraction of former numbers. Their origin is believed to be horses that were left behind from Spanish expeditions in the 17th century.

Rare earth elements have made significant contributions to the development of high-tech industries, particularly in the field of functional ceramics. The addition of rare earth elements to raw materials can significantly improve the unique functions of these ceramics. Functional ceramics is a new type of ceramic material for meeting the developing needs of computer science, automatic control, sensing technology, bioengineering, environmental science and other fields.

During the last 30 years there has been a surge in the applications of rare earth elements and their alloys in several technology devices such as computer memory, DVDs, rechargeable batteries, autocatalytic converters, super magnets, mobile phones, LED lighting, superconductors, glass additives, fluorescent materials, phosphate binding agents, solar panels and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents. The most abundant rare-earth element is cerium, which is actually the 25th most abundant element in Earth's crust, having 68 parts per million (about as common as copper).

There are 17 metallic elements that make up the rare earths. You will find them, with the atomic numbers 21, 39, and 57–71, in the middle of the periodic table. These metals have unusual fluorescent, phosphorescent, conductive and magnetic properties—which make them very useful when alloyed, or mixed, in small quantities with less uncommon metals, such as iron.

Rare earth metals have enabled the miniaturisation of all of these systems, making smaller, more compact components.

In 1842 the number of known rare-earth elements was six: yttrium, cerium, lanthanum, didymium, erbium and terbium. Rare earth elements have become extremely important to our world of technology owing to their unique properties. These elements are critical to technologies ranging from mobile phones and televisions to LED light bulbs and wind turbines.

The art of creating stained glass windows to decorate churches and cathedrals is over a thousand years old. It took very skilled craftsmen to create them. Stained glass is glass that has been coloured by adding metallic salts during its manufacture, and normally by then further decorating it in various ways. Many large windows have withstood the elements for over hundreds of years and remained for the most part intact since the late mediaeval time.

It's like living in a computer-generated world where the sun when it rises is dusky pink and the ground is a grid of neon purple lines, which stretches out endlessly towards the horizon.

Is it a disco floor? Or the scene of an interactive futuristic game, with its neon lines, abstract sun in pink and blue, and the geometric palm trees lining the path with spiky mountains in the background?

Auroras occur when charged particles (electrons and protons) collide with gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere. Those collisions produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. As billions of flashes occur in sequence, the auroras appear to move or dance in the sky.

The aurora can be seen near the poles of both the northern and southern hemisphere. In the north the display is known as the aurora borealis; in the south it is called the aurora australis. What we are seeing in these beautiful displays in the sky are atoms and molecules in our atmosphere colliding with particles from the sun. The aurora's characteristic wavy patterns and curtains of light are caused by the lines of force in the Earth’s magnetic field.

What causes the different colours in the aurora? Different gases give off different colours when they are heated. The same process is also taking place in the aurora. The two primary gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are nitrogen and oxygen, and these elements give off different colours during an aurora display. The green we see in the aurora is characteristic of oxygen, while hints of purple, blue or pink are caused by nitrogen.

This is a piece of modern architectural work that is amazing in its use of swirling metal, which looks like it could almost be made of cloth, so graceful and lifelike are the curves.

Escalators are an indispensable part of a mobile society. They keep people moving in virtually all areas of public life, from airports and railway stations to shopping centres, large department stores and even the larger hotels. They can handle a huge amount of people, and are beneficial to the elderly or those with reduced mobility, as an escalator can be fitted in the same space as stairs, and means they don't have to climb stairs. There is no waiting time either -- just stand on the first step, hold the handrail and be transported to the floor or floors above!

This is the entrance to a mineral cave in Australia. What mysteries of nature can be found when deep in the dark cavern? The pastime of exploring such caves is known as speleology, which is the scientific study of caves, especially in respect of their geological formation, flora and fauna, etc

This cave in Hungary has natural mineral formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Speleothems, sometimes referred to as formations or decorations, are cave features formed by the deposition of minerals. The word speleothem is derived from the Greek words spelaion meaning "cave" and thema meaning "deposit". The speleothems with which most people are familiar are stalactites and stalagmites. Speleothems form at varying rates as calcite crystals build up. Most scientists believe that the color of speleothems are determined by the mineral content. Pure calcite is white and almost colorless. Iron and other minerals, as well as acids from surface vegetation, combine with calcite crystals to add shades of red, orange and black to the color of speleothems.

Expo 1958 - a window on the world! The Soviet pavilion featured the Sputnik; the USA pavilion offered the American Dream and the host country showcased the Belgique Joyeuse. The structure of the Atomium remains a famous landmark in Brussels. It is shaped like a cube balanced on one edge and represents an elementary iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.

We don't know whether this old-fashioned pushbike is really used to make deliveries or if it's been painted to match the establishment and set up as a nice piece of advertising, but either way, it's a striking piece of street art!

Ghent has had a tramway system, starting with horse-drawn trams, since 1874. There was a fleet of 100 horses. After a short-lived experiment using battery power, the system was converted to overhead electric wires from 1904. During the process of electrification, the track gauge was reduced from 1,435 mm (4 ft 8½ in) standard gauge to 1,000 mm (3 ft 33?8 in) metre gauge. The service is efficient and speedy, running from 05:30 until 23:30 with only five-minute gaps at peak times.

Windmill enthusiasts can have a rare old time exploring the 150-odd old windmills around Belgium! Some are still working mills; others have been converted into Airbnb accommodation. What better way to explore the Belgian countryside than to hire bicycles and make a tour from one windmill to the next!

This one was standing on the bed of the Lathkill, which is often dry in summer, disappearing in one place and reappearing further downstream. I am sure this robin could find plenty to eat in what was effectively a damp meadow. Five inches long and a bit more than half an ounce, the European robin is unafraid of man. Unlike many British birds, they stay for the winter. Often they can be seen perching on top of a spade handle, waiting to see what the digger turns up.

I was taking the ferry back to the Scottish mainland from the Orkney islands … that’s the island of Hoy behind the kittiwake. It had been a fabulous day with all kinds of great shots, and anything else I got would be an extra.

When this kittiwake came up behind the ferry, I had the feeling it wanted me to see it. So, I waited and waited until I had got the focus perfect. Then as soon as I had taken the shot, the bird flew away.

This was far from the last bird to leave me with the impression it wanted to be seen.

Cromford is a pleasant village set among steep slopes just to the south of Matlock. You would not guess from this picture that the Industrial Revolution began here!

Richard Arkwright made the worlds first water powered cotton spinning mill and sited it here in 1771, because of the fast flowing River Derwent. Later the Cromford Canal was built to take woollen goods to the river Trent, and thus to the world.

Before Arkwright, there was only cottage industry. His was the first factory anywhere. What he did in rural Derbyshire rapidly changed the world.

I started at Ladybower and I will finish there, too. That lens flare was caused by the moon. You can see the lower half of Orion in the top left of the picture. There are few lights out here; the tourist cottage on the hill opposite shines like a beacon. So here, the moon seems very bright.

I stood and watched as a river of clouds poured down the Ashop Valley from the top of Kinder Scout, 2000 feet up. Soon the last of the Northern Light was extinguished by the clouds which so often suffocate it.

Grazing on the undulating lowlands of Anglesey in front of the mountains of Snowdonia, this Welsh pony was probably the first animal of any kind which gave me the impression it wanted to be photographed. It posed more like a human than a horse. Once I had taken a photo it got on with grazing. I prefer the natural shot to the posed one!

Even more interested in the stags than the cameraman, the rest of the herd watches inter-stag conflicts attentively. Who wins, rules. Who rules, breeds.

There is a large well-cultivated garden at Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's country home. Did Tabitha Twitchit lose her kittens here? Did Jemima Puddleduck waddle by the wall? Did Samuel Whiskers escape down this path?

Writers write what they know and what they see, or they can never be authentic. Many of Beatrix' tales must have begun here in everyday incidents starring her pets and the local wildlife.

Some crops can be a riot of colour. This field was just a mile from my home at the time.

Once the home of Beatrix Potter, and the inspiration for many of her tales, this was the farmhouse from which she ran a 34 acre farm.

Miss Potter was not just a writer; her book sales paid for the purchase of several local farms, which she left to the National Trust. By doing so she preserved the landscapes she loved for many generations.

You can visit Hill Top today and view wild rabbits frolicking without concern behind a wire fence. They are only afraid of Mr Tod; the sandy-whiskered gentleman is just as much at home here as the rabbits.

Sitting atop three hundred foot cliffs by the sea, this site has been fortified in one way or another since the Iron Age. The current castle was built by Henry II in the twelfth century.

If, as I once did, you think the ruined castles of England have simply crumbled from lack of care, think again. Following the English Civil War (1642-1652), any fortification which had held out for the King was not only rendered incapable of doing so again, it was destroyed as an act of propaganda; oppose the winning side, and this is what happens. So you can immediately tell which side the lord of a castle fought for; if it is still in one piece, it had declared for Parliament.

Wagons HO! Trails were full of settlers seeking land and new life, their possessions carefully filling the wagon bed. Tarped against the pounding sun, and keeping mosquitos at bay during the night.

Old Fall River Road is Located in Rocky Mountain National Park. A 15.12 km (9.4 miles) narrow gravel, one-way road with many switchbacks leading up Mount Chapin’s south face. On the way up, there are waterfalls, pine forests, and Fall River Pass, 3,595 m (11,796 feet) above sea level. The speed limit on this windy road is 24.14 kph (15 miles per hour.)

Nestled in the San Juan National Forest is Emerald Lake, one of the Alpine lakes in the Weminuche Wilderness area. The San Juan National Forest covers 1.8 million acres from high-desert mesas to alpine peaks and is located in the southwest of Colorado.

Home of Devil's Tower, proclaims this small town's website. Perhaps that's why they have the spooky memorabilia right out front? Just look at all dem dry bones forming a somewhat gruesome arch framing the store sign! Dare we peek inside the 1880 Jail? Never mind skeletons in the cupboard, who knows what skeletons may be lurking inside the olde-time calaboose! Hulett (named after the first family to settle there in 1881) nestles in a valley surrounded by beautiful red rimrock with the Belle Fourche River flowing through it. Hulett has a population of just over 400 people.

A Union Pacific train speeds across a Wyoming prairie pulling cars loaded with coal. From the time it started in Omaha, where Union Pacific laid its first rails in 1865, a hundred years later Union Pacific had risen to become the largest domestic railroad in the United States. In such a large country as the US, fast and efficient transportation over thousands of miles of commodities such as coal, automobiles, foods, forest and agricultural products and chemicals is essential.

The Badlands in North Dakota in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park is not the same as the famous Badlands in South Dakota. The South Dakota Badlands have whiter clay, no vegetation to speak of, and is more rugged. North Dakota Badlands have prairie dogs, bison, wild horses, and a lot of vegetation.
Badlands is used to name any arid land with minimal vegetation and steep slopes with features such as buttes, hoodoos, ravines, and gullies. This type of terrain is created when soft sedimentary soil has been eroded. Badlands are found on every continent except Antarctica.

No one is home in the barn; the usual occupants are enjoying the sunny day and grazing on grasses far over the ridge. The barn may stay empty even at night, but it is there, standing ready if someone needs some shade.

Wild horses could not take me away, though they may blow me away as they gallop past. Thousands of wild mustangs roam the plains in Kansas, though they are not truly classified as wild, the only true wild horse in the world is the Przewalski's horse, which is found in Mongolia.
