I was a wee mouse, and my family was moving to a new location one winter. A blizzard came upon us, and I got lost. I stumbled around in the snow trying to find anywhere I could shelter, when a bright light appeared a short distance away. I walked toward the light and saw a festively decorated mansion. Hurrying toward the door to see if I could find a way in, a booming voice called out, “Ho ho ho, what have we here?”

A large hand scooped me up, and twinkly eyes looked me over.
"Little mouse, are you lost? Why would you be out on such a night?”

I explained to this jolly fellow what had happened.

Laying a finger aside his nose, he said, “You can live with me until you find your family in the spring.

From that day to this, I have lived in the delightful mansion and helped out how I could, and every Christmas Eve, I get to put the star on top of the tree that stands in the foyer.

Sniff, sniff. I smell something delicious. Do you smell it too? It must be baking day. I feel the urge to sneak into the kitchen and see if I can get a plate of whatever smells so wonderful. Oh, it’s quite fine. I often wander into the kitchen and have a nose around. Sometimes, the head baker leaves a tray for me of the new treats they have made. That smell is pulling me onward. I love tasty snacks. I don’t imagine there is anyone who does not, and I am so lucky to be living here where there is always something delightful to eat.

Honk! Honk! What is that undulating V-formation in the sky? The airborne birds have black heads, tan bodies, and white chinstraps, distinctive identifiers of the Canada goose. What destination are these geese travelling to? July 1st is too late for their spring migration and too early for autumn migration. The Canada geese are flying in the opposite direction that they usually fly, away from the grain fields and marshes they feed in. They seem to be headed for a city, a mystery indeed.

Oh, my! The flock of Canada geese is landing in front of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. They are honoured guests for Canada Day celebrations. The Canada goose is proud to represent the true north strong and free, the second largest country in the world, a beautiful land bordered by three oceans, with millions of hectares of unspoiled wilderness, vibrant modern cities, and people from all cultures. Like the people it represents, the Canada goose is polite, resilient, innovative, and tolerant. Listen! The Canada geese are singing with their wings over their hearts: “O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.” Happy Canada Day!
