Today is a glorious day. The sun is starting to peek above the horizon. It is time for my early morning run. I run for the exercise. I run because I love to run and feel the wind rush past my ears. I run because I need to check on all the fallen logs in the forest to see if anything tasty is hidden there. I run because I have an abundance of energy.
This afternoon, I will most likely be ready for a long nap. This is the way for bears. We go until we don’t. I would be pleased for you to join me in my early morning run.

Feint, parry, advance, thrust. Ah, you found me. Would you care to practice with me? I practice so I stay nimble on my feet. When you are out adventuring, you never know what trouble will come courting you and when you might need to make a quick dash to get away—plus there are rooftops, trees, runaway wagons, you know, the typical adventuring type stuff happening.

I drew a picture of a princess and a unicorn with my pencil crayons. I measured my juice box with my ruler. I painted a dinosaur with my paint brush. I wrote a story about a kitten on a train with my pen. I practiced printing with my pencil. I cut out my frog and lily pad with my scissors. Now I know where everything is. If I put my supplies back in my jar, Mrs. Owl will give me a Neat Treat card. I can save them up and buy prizes at the school canteen. I want the panda plushie, so I will need a lot of Neat Treat cards.

Meow! Here’s looking at you doing incredible work in your chosen sport. I go by the name of Cat’s Eyes Flowers or Popcorn Flowers, but my Latin name is Cryptantha and I am an annual herb. I have tiny white flowers and a fuzzy stem. When I am seen from a particular angle my flowers make a cute little face.

Ever since Bunny got their shiny new, all extras included, pink Vespa, Bunny has been zooming around town, zipping around corners, beeping and waving to every pet they pass.

Since the new Vespa is so quick and gets unbelievable mileage per carrot, yes, this Vespa runs on carrot power, Bunny has offered a delivery service to all the pets in PnF land, with a guarantee that the package will be delivered in five minutes or you do not have to pay. Such a deal. I wish, though, that Bunny would slow down around those corners.

Hahahehehahahahe! Did I startle you? Did you think I was a human laughing? No, just me, the Kookaburra. Now the question to ask is, was I laughing, or is this the way my call sounds? I would hate for you to not be able to join me in a good laugh, which I enjoy as much as any pet. Alas, this time I was calling to see if there were any more Kookaburra in the area.

“Eek! A mouse! There's a mouse in the house! Quick! Run!”

But wait! I’m just an itty bitty baby! And super cute to boot! Please don't leave me alone outside, as there are lots of animals that would like to eat me! And please please don’t put me in a habbi with Scaredy Cat, because he terrifies me!

I promise not to grow up into one of those horrible rodents that runs up your leg or gnaws their way into your packets of grain. Just make sure my living space is clean, and provide me with food, and I'll provide you with all the love you need! But if you don't like that idea, I can just sleep the day away in the corner here, and sneak a little food to nibble on when you’re not looking?

I have to cut out a frog and a lily pad and colour them. Mrs. Owl says we can make our frogs fly around like the ones in the Tuesday book she showed us. I have to be careful with my scissors. I can’t poke anybody because Mrs. Owl will make me sit on the time-out mat, and my frog won’t get to fly around the classroom on its lily pad.

Mrs. Owl says we get to draw now. She read us an exciting story about a princess and a unicorn. She told us to let pictures form in our imaginations while she was reading and draw what we saw. I saw a giant tree that the princess climbed to get to the sky country, so I am going to draw tall green trees behind the princess’s castle. I hope Mrs. Owl likes my drawing and puts a star on it.

Uh oh, if the wind keeps up I'm going to be having a bad tree day! My leaves just keep falling off. At this rate, I'll be bald in no time. Does any pet have a large scarf I can borrow? Maybe I can wrap it around my branches so I don't lose all my beautiful leaves!

My favourite day is any day where the sky is clear and the sun is shining bright in the sky. I love to flitter among the blossoming flowers and rippling tall grass, the light breeze warming my wings. Basking in the sun is the most relaxing part of my day - and it lasts all day!

Ah ha! Exactly what the pupils were hoping to find in their school bags! A multipurpose white stick! This may have been intended for use as a ruler, but the pupils’ imaginations are not so staid! They will find a myriad of other uses for it, like using it as a jousting stick, a sword, a poker and a fly swatter. And only if it survives all of those other applications, this multipurpose white stick may then be put to use as a ruler…

I may decide to go and pay a visit to some pet friends, or I may go collect berries; I love berries. There is also the possibility of going fishing in the river. Being a bear, I am curious about so many things. Sometimes my curiosity can get the better of me. So I am standing here and letting myself look out over the landscape and think about what I want to do. Sometimes being a bear means contemplating choices.

An old bear is a wise bear, and this bear is very wise indeed. He has seen a lot in all his years, and he has made friends with all who live in PnF land. He loves to sit and think about things. He will sit for hours to think about how the body moves when playing a sport, and how the wind can affect the outcome if the grass is wet or dry. If the rain is falling or if the sun is in the player's eyes.

If you see this bear gazing off into the distance, keep walking; this old bear is deep in thought, and even a pot of honey will not bring him out of his thoughts.

The floor is even, smooth and free from clutter. The space is just large enough for my body, cozy and warm. The winter winds can howl, the snow can fall, and I won’t notice at all. Snug and safe, I won’t awake now until spring. I don’t need to eat anymore, I will live off my fat reserves, and I won’t even need to take a break to go outside; my body will absorb any waste. I will see you in the spring. Goodnight, dear pets. Zzzz. Berries, salmon, clams…

I need to conserve my energy as I don’t want to lose any of my hard-won plumpness, but I still love to play in the leaves, tossing them high in the air and finding the perfect leaf to chase. In fact, I love to play with all manner of things I find. I can wave around a stick like no one else, be careful if you are sitting next to me; I don’t want to bonk you on the head by mistake.

The days are beautiful, with a much gentler sun filtering through the trees. I will nap more now and dream of the fish I still hope to eat. When you are a bear, there is no such thing as too plump. Cooler weather means that soon, I will need to start making my way up into the mountains to find the best place to dig my den. For a few more weeks, I will enjoy these days of abundance and play for the sheer joy of being a bear.
