During the last 30 years there has been a surge in the applications of rare earth elements and their alloys in several technology devices such as computer memory, DVDs, rechargeable batteries, autocatalytic converters, super magnets, mobile phones, LED lighting, superconductors, glass additives, fluorescent materials, phosphate binding agents, solar panels and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents. The most abundant rare-earth element is cerium, which is actually the 25th most abundant element in Earth's crust, having 68 parts per million (about as common as copper).

There are 17 metallic elements that make up the rare earths. You will find them, with the atomic numbers 21, 39, and 57–71, in the middle of the periodic table. These metals have unusual fluorescent, phosphorescent, conductive and magnetic properties—which make them very useful when alloyed, or mixed, in small quantities with less uncommon metals, such as iron.

I almost want to take a bit of this, but I refrain. A swirled blue background with the greeting and accents of gingerbread and snowflakes.

Like many Commonwealth countries, Australia's flag depicts the Union Jack. The large Commonwealth Star beneath the Union Jack represents the Australian States and Territories, and the Southern Cross refers to Australia's geographical location.

The perfect party location has been found. A large grass-covered field, close to town, so that all the pets can easily walk to the party. The grass is smooth and the area is surrounded by low bushes, to help dampen any sounds from the music. There is plenty of room for games, food tables, dancing, and a band. What are you waiting for, get those invitations out to all the pets and set up your end-of-summer party the way you have always wanted. Where did I put my dancing shoes?

Everything is hushed and resting. For a few moments, time seems to stand still; the very air has stilled. Breathe deeply, close your eyes, and let the silence wash over you as you allow your mind to become silent and let go of any worries.

During the rainy season, the swamp is much deeper and perfect for hiding those hippos while they hide from the hot hot sun!

Would you become tired like you do if you walk for a long time on the ground, or would you be able to walk and never tire, no matter how far you went?

Two red hearts flying high are a joyful sight, and flying kites is always such a fun pastime. The day is clear, and the breeze is steady—let’s join these happy people and fly some kites of our own.

Where do I want to be? Under the sea. The water is warm the fishes are darting around in colourful schools—nibbling a bit of plant here and there.

Our images in this chapter of "Elements" range from the exciting and dramatic to sweet scenes suitable for decorating a young pet's bedroom! We can see a cute little ladybird apparently drinking from a raindrop! There are also misty, dew-rimmed flowers. fronds and fruit, and of course, beautiful aquatic sights such as a waterfall and ice floes.

Can you feel the love tonight? The peace the evening brings? Time for the critters to escape the water and graze on the lush green grass. Perfect for those gorgeous summer nights on the savannah.

Lots of opportunity to escape from the hot sun here in this swampy area. During the rainy season, the swamp is much cleaner and deeper. Come hop in the water to cool off, or plop down under a tree for some shade. Either way, you must get out of the sun!

Rays of light seek out the ocean depths, illuminating sea life and creating a dreamy atmosphere. Will you come to dive with me beneath the ocean waves, and we can look to see what the light is pointing us to.

Upon a hill dressed with cedar, fir and spruce, overlooking a lake of blue, my pets and I walk the many trails in search of adventure. There are bears and cougars here, and we see evidence of their presence. We will rest awhile soon under one of the many trees.

I don’t think a troll lives in that house. Should we find out? The surroundings are beautiful and that bridge, I want to come back here in the spring and toss sticks from that bridge into the water and see where they end up.

But, while all else is still, one Pet stands upon the deck, looking across to the island, deep in thought. Is this Pet simply marveling at the wonders of the Pet universe, or do they await a flash of light from the far side of the island, arranging a secret tryst with a mysterious castaway…?

The beginnings of the Passover story don't necessarily start with Moses, Pharoah, and Egypt - but with a young man named Joseph. He was sold into slavery to traveling merchants by his own brothers! God was with him though and after decades he became second in power over all of Egypt. He eventually brought his father, Jacob, and all of his brothers and their families to live in Egypt. Hundreds of years later his people were slaves to a new Pharoah, and that's when Moses came on the scene.

Frost covers the windows of your cottage, hinting that it is a chilly, crisp air outside. It must be windy, as you can see the leaves blowing against your window!

The water gently rustles under a thin sheet of ice covering the lake. Snow is thick on the mountains and rests gently on the lake. All is silent except for the trickling of water you hear in the distance. Not even the birds are chirping, as they are only just beginning to wake up from the winter freeze. The ground is free of white cotton snow, yet hard under your feet from the crisp temperature. It is always chilly here in the mountains, yet the animals are glad that spring is coming. The Yeti watches from high up on the mountain, wondering how much longer it will be until he can swim. He likes to swim almost as much as he likes to dance. But for now, he will be patient and sit silently enjoying the sound of the lake slowly coming back to life.

Sunbeams filter through clear water to the cool ocean depths. Air bubbles rise to the surface, alluding to a life filled ocean world deep beneath the surface. But you'll need to dive even deeper to discover whether there is a hidden city, a hidden predator or a bubbling hot spring nestled on the ocean bed!

As vast as the imagination, The Open Sea beckons pets young and old to come and test their sea legs, in the water or on it! Most pets can swim or sail The Open Sea for days, without ever seeing or hearing another soul. Until you, the artist, add some sea birds, a boat, or even an island for them to stop and visit...

Your little pet has come to the seaside, and watches patiently on the shore, hoping for a glimpse of sea life. Will your pet leap into the water in glee, splashing around in the shallows? Will a seal or a manatee swim to shore to greet them? Or will a pirate ship round Lighthouse Point, giving the rocks a wide berth?

Somewhere, beyond the limits of space and time, in a parallel dimension exists an enchanted floating island. Rumor has it that the enchantment that once anchored Trilliant Island to PnF Land is failing, and that it’s only a matter of time before Trilliant Island Floats off into Space...
Will your Pet reach Trilliant Island in time to cross the suspension bridge, before the island floats off into the nether regions, and if they do reach the island, will they be able to return?

Your pet will need to wrap up warmly and perhaps don snowshoes for this part of the quest! The journey starts in beautiful snowy scenes where some quite rare animals and birds are waiting to welcome your pet to their wintry world. The quest continues to cliffs, then rocky and sandy seashores and culminates in your pet sailing on the sea to view the watery world and its inhabitants! The octopus has promised to put in an appearance, and the shark has been practising his fiercest, most glary expression, but that’s to conceal his heart of gold and cuddly disposition! Bon voyage!

Bigfoot Arctic Mountaintop is not quite the cold and lonely mountaintop it appears to be at first glance! It is, in fact, a veritable playground for the ermine and arctic foxes that love to cavort along its ridges; play “hide and go seek” in its crevices; and take shelter in its caves…
