The first painted eggs came from Mesopotamia, and because eggs were forbidden food during Lent, people painted eggs while Lent was being observed—after Lent, they would eat the eggs on Easter Day.

Beautifully decorated eggs “pysanka” are associated with Ukraine, and the oldest painted egg that was unearthed in northern Ukraine is dated to the end of the 17th century.

“If there's time at the end of the day when we get back to our accommodation, I might do some initial sketches for a charcoal picture of one of our new friends," Inukshuk said, offering Chamaeleon a toffee from the bag and then unwrapping one for himself.
“That sounds like a good plan, Inukshuk!" said Chamaeleon. "Very relaxing, and your portrait will be a great souvenir of our visit to all these interesting creatures!"

Finley glanced up from his tour guide, in which he had been looking up where they were going the next day. “How come you're so hungry, Chamaeleon?”
Chamaeleon pouted. "I was just unwrapping my lunch pack when a creature ran down the tree behind me, grabbed the lot and shot back up the tree!"
"Bad luck!" sympathised Finley. "Here, have a banana to keep you going."

“Did you see those 2023 calendars in the giftshop?” asked Chamaeleon. "Each month features one of the critters we've met on our mini-safari! I'm going to buy one to hang up behind my model Fiat 500 from Turin and my ceramic Welsh clog from our British Isles tour."
"Sounds a great idea!" agreed Kiki. "I think I'll get one for my mum."

“Do you remember our last safari, Zuri?” exclaimed Chamaeleon. "I remember being really quite scared, trying to find the way out of that labyrinth in the dark!"
Zuri agreed. “D'you remember that scorpion? It was quite a shock coming across him in the light of the dim and flaring lamps, although he turned out to be very nice in the end.”
"It's hard to believe that was two years ago, Zuri," remarked Chamaeleon.

Toast was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Chamaeleon unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which she succeeded in knocking Toast’s sunhat off.
“Put that away, do!” said Toast, in some irritation. “We’re about to pose with this amazing creature—the picture will be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

“Ooh, it's just starting to get a bit cool, Chamaeleon!” said Tilly. “Can you hold my map and itinerary while I dig out my scarf?"
Chamaeleon good-naturedly took charge of Tilly's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof paper, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of chocolate peanuts, a paperback thriller, a bottle of orange squash, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old bus tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a door key, some very old receipts, a screwdriver, a bottle of multivitamins, a lottery ticket and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and salad cream before locating the scarf right at the bottom. This she donned and then Chamaeleon helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

My brilliant plumage has also earned me the nickname of Rainbow Pheasant, and my gorgeous array of feathers originally hailed from China, but you'll find that we were a desired export, and have adapted well to other places!

How remiss of them!” Seeing Chamaeleon’s ears beginning to droop, Choose a name added, “Don’t worry, you can give your card to reception at the hotel to post.”

Nocturnal by nature, you'll find me hiding by day in the dark leafy greens in your garden. We tried to ramp up our street cred by saying we were vampires, but we lacked the fangs to back up the claim.

"Is there a gift shop at the end?" enquired Chamaeleon. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."

Somewhere there's a blue anteater hanging around with a pink panther, but that's now who I am, although, I really do love ants! You'll find me in the rainforest, slurping up ants like a pro!
