In this part of the travel game, the pets delve into Bohemian culture in the area of the city that draws painters, writers, musicians, sculptors and others who express themselves through art. Whether the pets spend time discussing philosophy in one of the many quaint bars or observing the creation of a masterpiece in a tiny, paint splattered studio apartment, or viewing huge graffiti pictures, they will wind up their visit with a trip to some underground cellars before ending the day with the opportunity to purchase some flowers or an elaborately decorated ridotto mask!

"I'm not sure about Jay & Puddle's, though, Stevan. It sounds like there's the mother of all riots going on in there!" said Mr. Biggs.

Torch and Mr. Biggs paused to watch a pavement artist painting the portrait of one of their fellow-travellers. “Hi, Foxy!” called out Mr. Biggs excitedly.
Startled, the artist dropped his loaded brush on the ground, sending drops of paint flying in Torch and Mr. Biggs's direction!

The artists' quarter is known for inexpensive living for a creative or freelance lifestyle, nameless small rooms with bare walls, recycled furniture and good cooking, the type of aesthetic now replicated the world over. It maintains both an edge and an underground.

Choose a name was still mulling over a previous attraction. “All that paint coming off, and the crumbling stone! And they call it art?"
"Oh, Choose a name, you need to really feel and appreciate the different textures!" replied Mr. Biggs, a trifle condescendingly.
Choose a name sniffed. ”That's like saying you should butter your toast with your bare paw," she said. “You know, really appreciate those crumby, buttery textures (!)”

Wooden barrels made by skilled artisans and their perfect seasoning with Sherry wines creates a container without equal. In Spanish a barrel is called a “tonel” and the weight of a full barrel is 1 ton. It is the same in English where the origin of the word “ton” is “tun” a wooden wine vessel. A tonelada referred to the space needed for a tonel of liquid in a ship.

"Oh, I like the piece hanging on this wall," said Arthur enthusiastically. "Look at the undulating yet regular metalwork, and the lovely shade of magnolia that it's been painted in."
Mr. Biggs snorted. ”That's the radiator, Arthur!" he said.

These small windows are a delightful mix of ornate metal decoration contrasting with the smooth curves of the earth tone frames, all set off by the duck egg blue of the walls. This soft greenish blue stems from the first discovery of a blue pigment in the 18th century, which was then lightened with white.

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Rugan, after he and Mr. Biggs had spent some time exploring another long, narrow alleyway to its end. "Is there a gift shop at the end? The thought of that generally keeps me going."

The artists' quarter is known for its vibrant use of colour and this little road is no exception. Cerulean walls baked over the years by the sun to a more muted but no less beautiful shade make this house stand out!

Here the surface qualities of the water play a fundamental role in giving the composition of the architecture a final effect—acting in this case not as a perfect mirror but by giving a diffuse touch to the colour and texture of the reflected houses.

This beautiful remnant of thick stone wall of earth tones with its arch over weatherbeaten yet ornate wooden doors serve as a proud rejection of the characterless and purely utilitarian. Kalila looked round eagerly. "Mr. Biggs, I'll roll that barrel over here and we can both stand on it and take a selfie with this arty background behind us."
Mr. Biggs was dubious. "That barrel top might break under our combined weight and plunge us into a vat of sherry! Why don't we stand on those stairs instead?"
Kalila could be heard muttering that they could drink their way out, but headed towards the steps.

Well-worked graffiti art is typically bold, creative and colourful. It changes the character of the area where it appears. In many cases this is positive, since graffiti art can turn dull monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination. High-quality graffiti contained within a particular area can raise that neighbourhood's profile as an arts scene. In time, other artists flock there, and the cultural value of the area is increased. This can in the long-term aid the local economy, as tourists head to the area to look at the graffiti, and locally-run tours pop up to show visitors around.

Stained glass is an art form that has been in use since mediaeval times and we tend to associate it with church windows, a riot of bright colours illustrating a narrative. This example has the feel of industrial architecture about it, with its regular rectangular glass panes and muted colours but is nonetheless beautiful.

Handmade by Italian artisans, the Venetian masquerade or Joker mask has a long history. Venice is a city of romance and high fashion and the masks have always held a sense of mystery. Venetians were famous for hiding their identity and taking risks both in business and in love.
