Mr P begins his tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

“Oh hello, Mr P!” cried zora. “Didn’t we bump into each other at the Fiat racetrack in Turin last month? This is quite the change of scene, isn't it?”

Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

"Relax, Mr P!" said Max soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

@ Newfoundland King's Cove Cliff
“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like these ones pictured in our itinerary for the Maritime provinces? So romantic!" mused Mr P, sipping a leisurely fruit juice.
"Well, I don't know," said Cherrie. "It's not all about drinking orange juice and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs to operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Mr P considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."
Newfoundland King's Cove Cliff
Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

"It must be so romantic working producing maple syrup, Mr P," said lily contentedly sipping grape juice after a hard day’s sightseeing. "Imagine going from tree to tree to collect the sap every summer and seeing it turned into delicious syrup!"
"Hmm—now imagine being up at dawn in the cold winter with a great deal of complicated equipment,” said Mr P. “The work doesn’t stop.”

Driftwoods abound the shore lines of Newfoundland, begging to be taken home and used as an art sculpture in the yard. Alas, how to get it in the boot of the car? And oh, yes, clear customs? Better leave it and take a photo instead!

“What have you got in your tote bag, Ailfric?” asked Mr P. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Mr P,” responded Ailfric. “There’s deck shoes, snowshoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, flippers, walking boots, Wellington boots—you name it, I’ve got it!”

When the tide is low, you'll want to see if there are tidal pools of life nestled in the rocks here, but be sure to watch your paws, as the briny kelp can add to the slickness of the rocks here.

MotoMoto was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Mr P unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking MotoMoto’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said MotoMoto, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

“’Maple syrup is made from the xylem sap of maple trees. The trees most commonly used are sugar maple, red maple and black maple because of the high sugar content in the sap,’” read out Ivy Delightful Cheeks from the brochure.
“It’s making me hungry, Ivy Delightful Cheeks!” declared Mr P. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”

“If there's time at the end when we get back to the hotel tonight, I might do some initial sketches for a watercolour painting," Jewel said, offering Mr P a maple syrup toffee from the bag and then unwrapping one for herself.

"Have you seen this in our travel brochure, Mr P? There's a town in Vancouver Island called 'Youbou'—the founders of its mill, Mr Yount and Mr Bounton, combined the first halves of their respective surnames to make Youbou in 1914."
Shamika grinned and thought about it for a minute. "I guess it's like Waitrose in England, from Mr Waite and Mr Rose."
"Waitrose isn't a town, though, Shamika."
"Edgar wishes it was!"
Newfoundland Rocky Beach
The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

"Hey, look at Shuswap in the brochure," said Butterscotch. "'The city's new claim to fame: the world’s largest treble clef. It is more than 42 feet (13m) high!'"
"Wow! Is there music to go with it?" asked Mr P.
"Yup. The first notes of O Canada," responded Butterscotch.

Newfoundland Stephenville Crossing
In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
