In this part of the travel game, the pets delve into Bohemian culture in the area of the city that attracts painters, writers, musicians, sculptors and others who express themselves through art. Whether the pets spend time discussing philosophy in one of the many quaint bars or observing the creation of a masterpiece in a tiny, paint splattered studio apartment, or viewing huge graffiti pictures, they will wind up their visit with a trip to some underground cellars before ending the day with the opportunity to purchase some flowers or an elaborately decorated ridotto mask!

"Oh, I like the piece hanging on this wall," said THUMPER enthusiastically. "Look at the undulating yet regular metalwork, and the lovely shade of magnolia that it's been painted in."
Rhythmm snorted. ”That's the radiator, THUMPER!" she said.

Rhythmm and Reynard shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Rhythmm. “Let’s change sides.”

Roxy was still mulling over a previous attraction. “All that paint coming off, and the crumbling stone! And they call it art?"
"Oh, Roxy, you need to really feel and appreciate the different textures!" replied Rhythmm, a trifle condescendingly.
Roxy sniffed. ”That's like saying you should butter your toast with your bare paw," she said. “You know, really appreciate those crumby, buttery textures (!)”

A narrow street just made for wandering down and dropping into wherever you come across that looks interesting, be it a bar, studio or shop. Fun spots can be random and ramshackle!

@ Bougainvillea Alley
Shadow looked round eagerly. "Rhythmm, I'll roll that barrel over here and we can both stand on it and take a selfie with this arty background behind us."
Rhythmm was dubious. "That barrel top might break under our combined weight and plunge us into a vat of sherry! Why don't we stand on those stairs instead?"
Shadow could be heard muttering that they could drink their way out, but headed towards the steps.
Bougainvillea Alley
Some of the best local bars seem to put in minimal effort yet still get it right. Some artists like to congregate, finding fellowship and inspiration in the company of other artists.

“Are you limping, NightGhost?” asked Rhythmm.
“No, it's just these cobblestones are a little difficult to navigate after a time!" said NightGhost.

Rhythmm agreed. ”There's something about looking at a bunch of art fixtures that makes me very thirsty, Sugar!" she said.

"I just want to stay here a little while and chill out to the sound of that heavenly mandolin. You go ahead if you want, I'll catch you up!" said Waddles.

The artists' quarter is known for inexpensive living for a creative or freelance lifestyle, nameless small rooms with bare walls, recycled furniture and good cooking, the type of aesthetic now replicated the world over. It maintains both an edge and an underground.

Wooden barrels made by skilled artisans and their perfect seasoning with Sherry wines creates a container without equal. In Spanish a barrel is called a “tonel” and the weight of a full barrel is 1 ton. It is the same in English where the origin of the word “ton” is “tun” a wooden wine vessel. A tonelada referred to the space needed for a tonel of liquid in a ship.

"We're really spoilt for choice when it comes to cafés and bars, aren't we, Rhythmm?" said Choose a name.
"I'm not sure about Jay & Puddle's, though, Choose a name. It sounds like there's the mother of all riots going on in there!" said Rhythmm.

These small windows are a delightful mix of ornate metal decoration contrasting with the smooth curves of the earth tone frames, all set off by the duck egg blue of the walls. This soft greenish blue stems from the first discovery of a blue pigment in the 18th century, which was then lightened with white.

Rhythmm was listening enraptured to the piano music by the wall. “My dad used to play this, Milagros!” she exclaimed happily. "Sobre las Olas or Over the Waves. This takes me back!"

Mauvey bent down to pick up a carelessly discarded sweetie wrapper and made to put it in the bin. "Be careful, Mauvey!" cried out Rhythmm hiding a grin. "That's probably part of someone's art installation."
"Oh tosh, Rhythmm. It's a sweet wrapper."
Rhythmm looked amused. "A surprising number of entire art exhibitions are thrown away by the cleaners assuming they're rubbish, you know."
Scary Skeletal Scavenger
Well-worked graffiti art is typically bold, creative and colourful. It changes the character of the area where it appears. In many cases this is positive, since graffiti art can turn dull monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination. High-quality graffiti contained within a particular area can raise that neighbourhood's profile as an arts scene. In time, other artists flock there, and the cultural value of the area is increased. This can in the long-term aid the local economy, as tourists head to the area to look at the graffiti, and locally-run tours pop up to show visitors around.

Stained glass is an art form that has been in use since mediaeval times and we tend to associate it with church windows, a riot of bright colours illustrating a narrative. This example has the feel of industrial architecture about it, with its regular rectangular glass panes and muted colours but is nonetheless beautiful.

These stairs, with their quiet cream and brown colouring, and multistorey stairwell view ever upwards, create a definite vibe.

"Is there a gift shop at the end? The thought of that generally keeps me going."

Venetian Masquerade Mask
Handmade by Italian artisans, the Venetian masquerade or Joker mask has a long history. Venice is a city of romance and high fashion and the masks have always held a sense of mystery. Venetians were famous for hiding their identity and taking risks both in business and in love. The wearing of masks at balls and masquerades spread and they would be worn in Mozart's Salzburg and at fashionable Georgian London ridottos.
