Sparkle and Choose a name are excited to find out what is in store for them in the Autumn Experience! As they enter, they each receive a free map! It reads:
Autumn in Red
Fall foliage in striking hues of red and orange will be seen all around on this tour along the riverbank. Your pet can collect pine cones, sample wild berries and currants, view beautiful plants in purple and red, and perhaps spot some exotic birdlife! Everypet will enjoy lingering on the bridge to view the peaceful scene as the sun goes down turning the river pink as it does so ...

Before we begin the journey we need to check-in here to pick up a trail map and some travel snacks. Be sure to sign the register with how many are in your travel party and how long you plan to be on the trail. Don't forget to take a potty break before you head out!

@ Sleepy River Sunrise
"Put your camera down for a minute, Sparkle," said Lyra, "and just drink in that view!"

The sun is just beginning to illuminate the sky, casting a warm glow on the sleepy river and the sleepy pets in the village. We begin our journey early in the cool of the day as the PnF weatherpet has predicted an unusually warm autumn day ahead.

@ Sunrise Silhouette
Sparkle and Odyssey were so rapt gazing at the scenery they almost forgot to shake paws before moving on to the next stage!

As the sun continues to rise and the chill of the morning gives way, some of the hikers begin to shed their warm jackets and stuff them in their packs. A lone plant is dramatically silhouetted in the sun's golden light.

@ Autumn Stillness
Sparkle and Grace agreed that the variety of scenery on their Autumn Experience trip was the best ever! They exchanged opinions on which their favourite scene had been so far, and which was the most delicious harvest food they had eaten in their travels!

As we behold the beauty of the golden leaves in the nearby trees, some clouds have rolled in, obscuring the sun for a bit. Some small fish in the river below are dining on insects that skim along the surface, creating little ripples on the calm water.

@ Orange Splendor
“I could stay here forever, Sparkle,” said Lady Jane. “This is an amazing place!”
“Well, you never know what lies ahead, Lady Jane. I wouldn't be surprised if the next stop is even better!” said Sparkle.

The glorious colors of autumn overflow in profusion along the trail prompting a chorus of 'oohs' and 'ahs' among the travelers. We pause and stare in rapturous awe for a moment before proceeding.

@ Ginger Root
“Hey, miniyao!” called out Sparkle. “Come and have some of this—it’s delicious!”
miniyao was glad to relax and enjoy the food Sparkle shared with her.
Ginger Root
Ginger root is a well-known natural remedy for some common ailments. If you are prone to stomach upset and indigestion, nibbling on a small piece of raw ginger or drinking ginger tea can help alleviate your symptoms. But it is most useful on the journey as it helps your body to recover from muscle soreness after over-exertion. It will definitely come in handy today!

@ Japanese Maple in Orange
Arriving at such a wonderful location spurred Sparkle on to get to the next stop on the Autumn Experience. However, Starla sat down, insisting on a rest and complaining of blisters!

An important reminder when one is out on an adventure: remember to look up! There is so much beauty around us, we don't want to miss any of it, especially when it is something as wonderful as the sun's rays filtering through the orange leaves of this Japanese Maple tree.

Sparkle and Bess, having shaken paws, got so engrossed in conversation about the beautiful scenery that they had to hurry along so as not to be left behind! They regretfully bade au revoir and auf Wiedersehen to each other!

See, glancing upward occasionally does have its benefits! As we continue along the trail we see a different variety of Japanese Maple, no less beautiful than the orange one. A treat to our eyes, this one is adorned in a fabulous crimson red.

"I think I'll take a cutting of the plant in that tub over there," said Sparkle. The label says it's 'vigorous' and 'fearless'."

The PnF gardener has done a fabulous job landscaping along the trail. Pots of flowers have been placed throughout to display an array of vivid autumn colors. This deep pink hued dahlia is delightful!

@ Marvelous Magenta Flower
"How on earth do you identify what this is from the thousands of things it could be?" asked Shelby.
"Well," said Sparkle, "you go through a checklist. Like what sort of leaves does it have, how are they arranged on the stem, do they have stalks, what's its habitat; that kind of thing. I'll lend you a book when we get home."

Be still and maybe it won't see you. Look over there on that red flower. It's a Micronesian Myzomela, and I almost didn't see it as it is somewhat camouflaged by the wispy red flowers it is sipping nectar from.

@ Red Berries
"This is a glorious specimen, Snarky", observed Sparkle. "What a shame that in a month or so all this colour will be gone!"
"You know the best way to get colour in your garden all year, Sparkle?" said Snarky. "Buy a garden gnome!"

@ Basket of Pine Cones
“Hey, Esmerelda!” called out Sparkle. “Come and have some of this—it’s delicious!”
Esmerelda was glad to relax and enjoy the food Sparkle shared with her.

According to the note attached to the basket, each of us is supposed to take a pine cone and plant the seeds in the designated area ahead. A park ranger will give us instructions when we get there. A pine forest covered in fresh snowfall is one of the most beautiful sights to see in winter. I'm happy to help add to that beauty!

“Oh hello, Sparkle!” cried Balthazar. “Didn’t we bump into each other at Crocodile Creek a while ago?”

Mr. Dylan and Sparkle shook paws and then they both admired the magnificent floral display beside them.

The unmistakable fragrance of roses captures my attention as I leave the wooded area. I look down to see a beautiful arrangement of autumn-hued roses in a white ceramic pot.

Sparkle normally avoided tourist hotspots but she was glad she had come, especially since meeting her friend queenielove here!

@ Juicy Blackberries
Inspired by the sunny day, fiffy said, “Wouldn't it be fun to work on the harvest?”
Sparkle took a more pragmatic view. “You’d have to be up before dawn every day and work for 12 hours practically non-stop!”

"I wish I knew more about horticulture, Dani" said Sparkle. "Sometimes I can't tell if something's a plant or a weed!"
"Oh, there's a sure-fire way of telling the difference, Sparkle! Pull on it—if it comes out of the ground easily, it's a really valuable plant.”

@ Shiny Redcurrant Berries
“These are great as a cake flavouring,” said Sparkle.
“You can add it to savoury dishes as well. It’s very versatile,” observed Bella.

Wild redcurrants can be found all over the countryside. They look temptingly sweet to eat, but these shiny red berries are usually made into redcurrant jelly because of their tartness.

Growing on the side of the bridge is a mass of deep red and purple leafy vines. Deep blue berries hang in bunches just waiting to be eaten.

Two beautiful waterlily dahlias in a vase create the perfect simple, yet elegant look. The stunning large blooms need no other adornment.

@ Teasels and Carnations
"Mandy, was that last one we looked at a thorn bush with roses? Or a rose bush with thorns?" asked Sparkle.

Teasel weeds are a very common roadside plant. They look beautiful for being a weed, don't they? They are a favorite among crafters as they can be dried and painted any color. These lovely bi-color pink carnations pair perfectly with the purple painted teasels.

“I’m going to have to spend a lot of time when we get back looking up what all these flowers are!” said Sparkle to Mini.

Sparkle is enjoying the Autumn Experience when Pookey comes along. "Look! A special prize!" says Pookey. Sparkle looks down and sees something valuable. Pookey generously lets Sparkle keep it!
