Ghost Pup
Far down the lane, near the beginning of the woods, stands an old abandoned house. If you were to stand and watch the house, you might catch a glimpse of pale light passing by the upper windows or hear strange sounds in the depths of the house.
Awoo! Awoo! Ghost Pup has been practicing their ghostly howl for days. Halloween is just around the corner, and Ghost Pup does not want to disappoint the pets that will be out on the streets on that spookiest of nights. Ghost Pup has also been working hard on gliding through walls and appearing and disappearing in the air. Ghost Pup loves this time of year; the air is crisp, the leaves skitter about the forest floor, and when Halloween night arrives, Ghost Pup loves to join in the fun with the pets roaming about the town.
Ghost Pup knows that some pets are timid and won’t come near the old house, so Ghost Pup will also travel the streets: howling ghostly howls, showing just a glimpse of themselves to the tick-or-treaters, or floating unseen with a group of pets, letting their ghost pup breath tickle the necks of the revellers. Oh, the squeals, laughter, and shivers of delight. Come on Halloween night.

Distance flyingMany species of butterflies that migrate thousands of miles south in the fall do not return to their previous summer residences. One autumn a few clever butterflies devised a plan to make the long trip back home so they could be reunited with their friends again next year. The butterflies stitched a map of each leg of the journey, updating it whenever they stopped at a rest stop. A single strand of silk from their silkworm cousins kept the map securely attached to their abdomens.
After a long winter in sunny Mexico the butterflies studied the map carefully, took a big sip of nectar from their favorite flower, and off they went. Imagine the surprise of all their friends back home when they returned the following summer! The garden was abuzz with tales of their amazing journey. The butterflies’ stories were so inspirational that they all decided they wanted to experience that kind of epic road trip for themselves. Year after year, they planned destinations further and further away so they could challenge each other to set a new long-distance record.
