Christmas Mouse

Let me tell you the story about how I became the Christmas Mouse.

I was a wee mouse, and my family was moving to a new location one winter. A blizzard came upon us, and I got lost. I stumbled around in the snow trying to find anywhere I could shelter, when a bright light appeared a short distance away. I walked toward the light and saw a festively decorated mansion. Hurrying toward the door to see if I could find a way in, a booming voice called out, “Ho ho ho, what have we here?”

A large hand scooped me up, and twinkly eyes looked me over.
"Little mouse, are you lost? Why would you be out on such a night?”

I explained to this jolly fellow what had happened.

Laying a finger aside his nose, he said, “You can live with me until you find your family in the spring.

From that day to this, I have lived in the delightful mansion and helped out how I could, and every Christmas Eve, I get to put the star on top of the tree that stands in the foyer.

Sniff, sniff. I smell something delicious. Do you smell it too? It must be baking day. I feel the urge to sneak into the kitchen and see if I can get a plate of whatever smells so wonderful. Oh, it’s quite fine. I often wander into the kitchen and have a nose around. Sometimes, the head baker leaves a tray for me of the new treats they have made. That smell is pulling me onward. I love tasty snacks. I don’t imagine there is anyone who does not, and I am so lucky to be living here where there is always something delightful to eat.

Oh, my days are so busy, but I am never too busy to stop and have a chat with the elves, the fairies and the reindeer. I gather news from all over, and I have secret tunnels that go through the mansion, so I can get anywhere I need to go very quickly.

Once a year, we have visitors' day; I would love for you to join me, and I can show you around and introduce you to a few of my friends. I have to run now, but it was so nice to meet you.

Your pet becomes an expert at finding its own food!

When you are small enough that major predators just take pity on you, and you can’t see as far as the mirror you are trying to recognise yourself in, familiar well-worn paths are all you ever venture on, and then you go as fast as you can to make sure nobody spots you before you spot them, because you can’t see them anyway …

The only safe way for tiny rodents and other miniature four-legged creatures to compete with one another is to go nowhere fast. Once the word leaked out about hamster wheels, everypet from geckos to beavers liked the idea. So now the big event for small creatures is wheel racing. If you have never heard about it, that’s because you were too big to notice!
