World Turtle Day

Scaredy Cat
Today we find Scaredy Cat with his emotional support dog JJ and Bob at the Rec Center, along with many other of their friends learning about World Turtle Day, which is May 23rd each year. JJ made sure they arrived early to get seats up front so that Scaredy Cat wouldn't be too anxious in the crowd. What fun to have a teacher that is a turtle too thought Scaredy Cat! They learned that there are 356 species of turtles across the world that live on sand or sea and that tortoises are turtles that live on land only. Turtles are primarily omnivorous, and tortoises are herbivores. Scaredy Cat was really excited to learn more about his turtle friends while Bob was eyeballing the chocolate peppermint turtle and the meatball plant next to him. Thinking of food made it hard for him to concentrate, but learning about his turtle friends is extra fun!

This week in the art challenge we are celebrating World Turtle Day! World Turtle Day is celebrated on May 23rd, but we are celebrating it all week long! The purpose of the observance is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive. Turtle Day is celebrated worldwide in a variety of ways, from dressing up as turtles to saving turtles caught on highways, to research activities. It has been sponsored yearly since 2000 by the nonprofit corporation American Tortoise Rescue. World Turtle Day was to increase respect and knowledge for the world’s oldest creatures. Turtles are reptiles, characterized by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. These gentle animals have been around for about 200 million years, yet they are rapidly disappearing as a result of the exotic food industry, habitat destruction and the pet trade. Show us in your art how you can show support for World Turtle Day. What kinds of things can you do to protect and show your appreciation of turtles?
Here are some fun things you can do to “shellebrate” this important observance:
* Take “shellfies” while visiting a turtle sanctuary or at the zoo.
* Follow @WorldTurtleDay on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to find tips for fun things to do and have the opportunity to score cool turtle items during giveaways.
* Join the party at home or at work. ATR created a World Turtle Day Party Pack that can be accessed for free here http://bit.ly/1YwebJR
* Create a display showing a variety of turtles and tortoises with some fun facts about each one.
