Scaredy Cat and his school friends are on a field trip to Buzzy Bee Farms. They're going here because May is the chosen month for World Bee Day and his teacher wants them to learn all about the bee from those who know them quite well. And who better to teach them about the bee than a beekeeper? They met the beekeeper inside of a roomy barn set up with benches and chairs. He gave them some fun facts that most of the students were unaware of. Did you know that bees must gather nectar from about 2 million flowers to make just one pound of honey? Mr. Beekeeper told the students that a honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour. Wow! That's pretty fast for an insect! Two of the funniest facts given are that bees don't have knees (who knew?) and that they communicate by dancing! That must be really fun to watch!! While this is all very interesting, Scaredy Cat is very unsure about this bee business. After all, he was stung once and he doesn't want to experience that again! Mr. Beekeeper assured him that honey bees do not have stingers. Phew! After they all finished with their lessons and getting a tour of the bee farm, the students were able to visit the gift shop where they were each allowed to take home a small jar of fresh honey. Now, they are going home where they are supposed to write an essay about their visit and what they learned at the bee farm. This week we're celebrating World Bee Day!! During this month, not only can one learn about bees and their purpose of pollinators and their importance to the ecosystem. May is the chosen month for this celebration because in the northern hemisphere the need for pollination is greatest during that period, while in the southern hemisphere it is a time for harvesting honey and bee products. How can you and your pets celebrate bees? Here's some clever things you can do: Like Scaredy Cat and his classmates, you can visit beekeepers to become acquainted with the work they do. Maybe you and your pet can dress up as a bee or wear clothing with bee motifs! You could always plant bee-friendly shrubs or flowers in your garden such as nectar-bearing flowers. Why not purchase some honey and other hive products from your nearest bee farm and then use them to make a "bee breakfast", serving on dishes decorated with cute little bees! Do you live in an apartment/flat where you don't a private garden, but you do have a private balcony or terrace? Why not paint some flower pots in bright colors, including a few bees, and place some flowers and other bee-friendly plants in them, placing them out on the balcony/terrace to attract some bees to visit? There are so many things to learn and things to do to celebrate the bee. However you decide to celebrate, don't forget to pick up some fresh honey or beeswax!
