Today we find Scaredy Cat hanging out with his friends JJ and with Bob in their favorite PnF coffee shop. While sipping on the Java drinks, Scaredy Cat wonders aloud why there is a giant calendar on the wall with February 29th as the only date? Bob responded excitedly "It is a Leap Year! It's an extra day in February added every four years to the calendar year." "But why is that necessary?" asks Scaredy Cat. Bob went on to explain "adding an extra day every four years keeps our calendar aligned correctly with the astronomical seasons since according to the Gregorian calendar (365 days) and a year according to Earth's orbit around the sun is approximately 365.2 days. Without this extra day, our calendar and season would wind up out of sync." "Wow, I had no idea you knew so much about all that" says Scaredy Cat. JJ, who had been sipping on her water and listening carefully jumped in and said "now we have an extra day to do some fun activities. That would make a great subject for this week’s art challenge!" The three friends agreed and finished their beverages.

Here's a fun fact surrounding Leap Day: Leaplings. What on earth is a Leapling? Leaplings are babies born on February 29th. Do your pets or hoomans celebrate on February 28 or the 1st of March? Also, ages ago, Leap Day was known as "Ladies Day" or "Ladies Privilege", the one day women were free to propose to men. Today it is commonly known as Sadie Hawkins Day. Folklore says the weather always changes on Friday. An old proverb says, "Leap Year was ne'er a good sheep year." Some believe leap year is good luck, while others believe it is not. However you choose to recognize Leap Day this year, we want to see in your art scenes how you will be utilizing the extra day this year? If you are a female, will you propose to a male? Do you have a birthday to celebrate? Or maybe some special project that the day gives you a bit more time to tackle it? Or will you be leaping for joy?
