Scaredy Cat is having a really rough day. Today at school, a couple of pets from another class that he didn't know said some very mean things to him. They said some unkind words, making fun of him because he was different than they were. They even said things that were not very nice about his comfort dog. Scaredy Cat doesn't understand how pets can be mean to others when they don't like something about you or when you're different than they are. He looks at himself in the mirror and swallows the tears that threaten to run down his face. He tries so hard to be a good kitty, using good manners, being helpful, and making sure that he does his best every day in whatever he is doing. He can't help it if he's different. Every pet is different in their own way - why does that have to be a problem? He isn't sure if he wants the milk and mouse cookies on the table anymore. He's too sad.
This week we're going to talk about being kind. With the tragic events showcasing hatred recently, it's good to talk about how we can be kind to one another despite differences we may have. There are going to be things about others that we don't like for one reason or another, but that doesn't mean that we have to treat them with disrespect and hatred. Whether it's because of something they believe in or a place they're from or even the way they live, there's no reason that you can't try to show kindness. There's so much hatred happening around the world and if each of us tried to be kind, maybe there'd be more peace in the world. I could specify the many things that seem to evoke hatred, but I feel that it would be singling out one group or another and PnF is not about singularity, but togetherness and community. This may be a hard challenge or it may be easy. All I'd like to see this week is ways that we can be kind to others - even if we are different than they are.
