You can feel the hush as two deer pose in a snowy meadow in the dark-blue dusk of a winter's day.

A picture that conjures up winter, with its bare trees, shorn of leaves, waiting patiently in the snow for the spring, when the cycle of life begins again.

A discarded masquerade mask sits amongst streamers. It sure was a fun party. The costumes were brilliant. Some pets were able to guess who was behind the masks. Other pets remained mystified until the end of the evening.

Rare earth elements have made significant contributions to the development of high-tech industries, particularly in the field of functional ceramics. On a slightly more serious note, all sorts of gadgets and devices are powered these days using magnets made from rare earth metals. These metals are being utilised increasingly in very high-tech systems and their success brings a boost to the economy. Rare earth magnets are made from the elements neodymium, iron and boron and so are known as NdFeB magnets. NdFeB magnets are the strongest magnets you can get (except for superconducting magnets). Rare earth metals are now utilised to improve the efficiency and performance of numerous technologies, including the magnetic technologies that power hybrid and electric vehicles, aircraft controls, loudspeakers, mobile phones, wind turbines, loudspeakers, factory automation equipment and robots! Rare earth metals have enabled the miniaturisation of all of these systems, making smaller, more compact components.

The innocent looking feline in the middle is thinking: "Why doesn't this human put the fire on?" And the grey cat is wishing you would stop whatever pointless activity you're engaged in and set his clockwork mouse going, or dragging a lure across the carpet for him to pounce on.

These clouds are so inviting, fluffy and soft. I wonder how it would feel to walk upon the clouds. Would the feet sink deep into the cloud or would your feet skim lightly across the top? Would you become tired like you do if you walk for a long time on the ground, or would you be able to walk and never tire, no matter how far you went?

Our images in this chapter of "Elements" range from the exciting and dramatic to sweet scenes suitable for decorating a young pet's bedroom! A lovely Cherry Blossom tree blooms in Nomahegan Park, one of 36 Union County parks that encompass 6,200 acres. This park is located in Cranford, NJ. The capital, Ottawa, is modern and multicultural, as is Toronto, which is not far from Niagara Falls and the USA border. Quebec has a predominantly French-speaking community but a good proportion of inhabitants are of Irish descent. Quebec City, the capital of Quebec, has an old-world European charm, as does Montreal. Three-quarters of the world's maple syrup is produced in Quebec! British Columbia, Canada's westernmost province, has immense mountains, deep forests and dramatic coastlines, and Vancouver is a delight. Alberta: three words--Banff National Park! See the amazing Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. Then Saskatchewan, where you can enjoy unique landscapes with road trips, hiking, enjoying incredible sunsets and sunrises and abundant wildlife. Polar bear safaris can be undertaken in Manitoba, or how about a trip to the Royal Canadian Mint? Then there's Newfoundland and Labrador: "Anything but Ordinary"! How about a spot of whale-watching or iceberg-viewing? The Maritime provinces are the furthest east, consisting of New Brunswick (apple-picking, leaf-peeping, motorcycle routes); Nova Scotia (sailing trips, lighthouse-spotting) and Prince Edward Island (golfing, fishing, farming communities). Then to the north are the three Canadian territories. The Yukon offers experiences from the aurora borealis to beer festivals! The Northwest Territories is the dream place for anyone fond of the outdoors. Then Nunavut, where you can experience dog-sledding, snowmobiling and kayaking!

Is this pattern from the (faux) hide of a cow or is it an ink blot go awry? Only the designer truly knows.

Self sustaining and fully stocked, these long term pets live a quiet and restful life during the long winter months!

Another lounge complete with reading materials is bright and reminds them of the snowy landscapes they traveled through during the day. The carpet is soft and white as snow, but definitely not as cold - perfect for grabbing a sofa pillow and stretching out on!

Today's trip starts with the pets being picked up by motor vehicles. They try to catch sight of signposts to give a clue to their destination! Arriving at the train station, they climb aboard the Winter Express steam engine for a tour through a winter wonderland! The train stops for them to stretch paws, flippers and wings exploring a path through a snowy forest and on the way back they encounter a little creature clad in red and white trying out his skis! Back on board the journey through winter vistas continues until sunset. The train puffs its way across a stunning viaduct and on into the mist, before pulling up at the station where it is just a short distance to that night's house. Here the pets can explore the spacious interior including the library and wind down from their enjoyable trip out with hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Today's trip is on a modern train with spacious seats and large windows to enjoy the passing winter scenery. The train's first stop by a frozen lake allows the pets the opportunity to stretch their legs with a little skating! Let's hope there are no frozen paws from this adventure! The trip then proceeds to skiing grounds with steep snowy slopes, cable cars, chair lifts and an Olympic ski jump! The pets can also turn their paws to snowboarding if they wish. The pets will meet a cute little critter also trying to ski. Back on board the train at the end of an action-packed day, the pets will have the thrill of seeing the Northern Lights as they travel home in the setting sun to that night's lodging. There they will enjoy a warming milky coffee and a bowl of hot soup by the wood-burning stove in the dining room, while admiring the snowy scene outside.

A cute little fellow greets the pets this morning to herald the arrival of the morning's transport. The pets will pass wintry landscapes and greet all kinds of wildlife. They have the opportunity to explore bridges, a forest, a river and a snowbound wooden cabin before heading home in the sunset to that night's lodging. While passing the lumber store, they meet two more appealing little creatures keeping out of the cold. The pets then go inside for welcome bowls of soup and wind up their day by creating hot drinks with special chosen garnishes.

Your pet is welcomed in the morning by the jingle of sleigh bells, and two trusty brown steeds provide the transport for today's trip. Your pet will need to wrap up warmly for the ride! Along the way to the day's main event, the pets view winter flora transformed and beautified by frost, and they pass snowbound chalets. Today's tour provides an exciting opportunity to go paragliding! What splendid views can be seen while soaring in thermal currents high above the ground! After a safe landing, the day winds to its peaceful close of hot drinks, a log fire and another super house to explore.

The pets are collected after breakfast by a friendly array of sled dogs eager to be off! They will have to hang on tight for a speedy journey through a wintry vista before arriving at the aerodrome, where the pets will board a light aircraft for the day's trip. There will be superb aerial views of snowy mountains far below, with Alpine villages and public gardens becoming clearer in detail as the plane descends on its flight path for landing. As sunset falls the plane will land within easy walking distance of the night's accommodation. Here the pets can gather on large, comfy sofas to swap stories of the day's experiences, recharge their energy with cups of cappuccino, then enjoy hot bowls of soup and bread, and perhaps relax with a book before bedtime.

AROOOOOO!!!!!!!! You hear the sound of a howl far in the distance…and then the sound of something that sounds like a howl but isn’t quite right. The scent of pine trees fills the air and a fresh coat of snow is on the ground. It’s the perfect weather for sled riding. Husky dog teams are often seen on these hills, pulling the sleds behind them. But today, a little husky puppy frolics in the snow, much more interested in playing than watching his elders pull a sled. He is too tiny to help but not too small to watch. He tilts his head to the right as he listens to the adults use their vocal cords. He tries to do the same and that is the sound you hear. The sky is overcast and more snow threatens to fall. Yet, you can’t help smile at the sound of a young puppy attempting to howl into the sky. You know that one day, that puppy will grow big and strong, and it will be he that you see pulling the big dog sleds.

All is still and quiet, and the light is beginning to fade, on this cold and lonely late afternoon. Winter has arrived. The landscape is blanketed in snow. The endless white is broken only by fir trees, which are soon to be some Pets’ Christmas trees… But where are the Pets? Could they really miss Christmas altogether, because they’ve snuggled down to sleep through the winter?

As dawn breaks on Bigfoot Mountain, the snow gives way to clear crisp air. No wind lifts the fallen snow, no bird is on the wing, and no soul stirs on the lonely desolate mountaintop. The trees in the valley watch on, knowing that the mountain will run with fresh streams, if springtime should ever come to this valley…

It is nearing the end of autumn. The first snow had fallen weeks ago on grass that has been slowly dying. The lake began to freeze a month ago and the ice is almost thick enough for the yeti to stand on. Until then, he sits by the lake, enjoying the sounds of nature all around him. He hears big snowballs falling from the mountain in the distance. The sound of deer playing on the hardened ground is much closer and he smiles at the thought of the fun they are having. The deer are his friends, as are most creatures here by the mountain lake, as they are not afraid of his big stature because they know he is a gentle giant. Birds fly in and out of the trees, preparing nests to keep them warm in the upcoming winter. The yeti enjoys the songs they sing. There is a faint hint of water moving far below the ice and it adds a background melody to the birds’ songs. He is excited, as winter is coming which is his favorite time of year. So he sits and waits amongst natures finest creatures, waiting for the world to turn purely white.

The water gently rustles under a thin sheet of ice covering the lake. Snow is thick on the mountains and rests gently on the lake. All is silent except for the trickling of water you hear in the distance. Not even the birds are chirping, as they are only just beginning to wake up from the winter freeze. The ground is free of white cotton snow, yet hard under your feet from the crisp temperature. It is always chilly here in the mountains, yet the animals are glad that spring is coming. The Yeti watches from high up on the mountain, wondering how much longer it will be until he can swim. He likes to swim almost as much as he likes to dance. But for now, he will be patient and sit silently enjoying the sound of the lake slowly coming back to life.

The yeti admires the blanket of white that is on the mountains. This is his favorite time of year, though he knows not all of his mountainous friends enjoy the bitter cold. He was made for this type of weather. It is the morning after a heavy snowfall and all is white in his world. Yeti approaches the frozen lake, excited that it is the dead of winter and the water is now so thick and solid, that it can support his weight. It is time for dance. The iced lake becomes his dance floor where he can glide smoothly and effortlessly around the frozen body of water. He dances with passion, with love, hoping beyond hopes that his true love is out there, somewhere, just waiting to be found. He twirls and glides along the ice feeling free and at peace, just like the peaceful world surrounding him.

Your pet will need to wrap up warmly and perhaps don snowshoes for this part of the quest! The journey starts in beautiful snowy scenes where some quite rare animals and birds are waiting to welcome your pet to their wintry world. The quest continues to cliffs, then rocky and sandy seashores and culminates in your pet sailing on the sea to view the watery world and its inhabitants! The octopus has promised to put in an appearance, and the shark has been practising his fiercest, most glary expression, but that’s to conceal his heart of gold and cuddly disposition! Bon voyage!

As nightfall closes in, and the lands below cool rapidly, majestic birds of pray hover silently over the Bigfoot Twilight Mountaintop. For they love catching the last updrafts of the day, before returning to their roosts in these lonely peaks, to tuck their young in for another long cold night…

As dawn breaks across the mountaintop, the land below slowly begins to warm. But the nocturnal mountain Pets are already safely tucked away in their caves and burrows. For they know only too well, that the majestic mountaintop birds of prey have been silently waiting, and are ready to catch the first updrafts of the day…

As dawn breaks over the mountain ridge, wind buffets the peaks, swirling powdery snow into the air. As the wind whistles through crevices and cracks in the ice, time appears to have been frozen on this desolate and lonely ridge, as nothing grows and not a single creature stirs…

The blueness of the winter sky creates a soft blue glow on the snow covered ground.

This beautiful scene is currently silent and serene, but all of that is expected to change, once the winter pets wander further afield, foraging in the snow for what remains of the autumn grasses and roots. As the Winter Hillside in Deep Snow opens in the PnF Editor, snowy dwellings and curious pets are drawn to its picturesque peacefulness, and they begin populating the scene, creating breathtaking winter art for others to enjoy!
