Sssorry! I did not mean to ssstartle you. Please don’t run away. I was just over there on that cracked rock, sssunning myself. I have been watching you when you come out to play with your pets, and I thought to myself how I should introduce myself and maybe we could be friends.

Ahem, here I am, introducing myself to you. Thank you for not running away; it is hard being a sssnake. I am a harmless garden sssnake; I live over there, under that flower pot—please don’t take it away, or I will have to find a new home, and I am not sssure I can find a home as cozy as under that pot. I love to come out and sssunbathe when the sssun is ssshining, but I am a bit lonely. I can’t bite, and I don’t eat much. Do you think we can be friends?

Am I not the cutest bunny you have ever seen? I have lovely soft silver fur, large floppy ears, and a little pink nose that twitches in excitement at the slightest delicious smell. My little fluffy tail has a touch of white on it that flashes when I dash under a shrub.
I love carrots, lettuce, and hay—which is not very exciting and does not make my nose twitch in joy. I love almost all fruit, but I have to be careful; my mom told me that fruit smells so good because it has a lot of sweet sugar, and one should never eat too much sugar, so I only eat fruit now and then. I think now is one of those times I can have some more fruit. I am going to find some unless you happen to have some handy.

I love to hop, and run and play in the sun; and hide under bushes and then hop out again to see if I scared a butterfly. Would you care to join me and we can chase the butterflies? They don’t mind. I think they find it funny because they can fly and I cannot, but I feel as if I could fly when I leap up high.
I hope you and your pets will be my friend, and oh yeah! I can help you in any sports you like to enter; I can hop far, and I bet I would win.

Hello, wind. This morning I came to sit beside this tree and wait for a friend. Did you come to wait for a friend too? This tree has been here a long time, a sturdy and dependable tree; its trunk is the perfect shape to sit against. Look! Up in the sky, the clouds are playing tag with each other. I would like to play tag too when my friend arrives. Hello clouds, do you see little me waving at you? Oh, that tickles! The leaves are dancing and whirling around me. I will dance with the leaves while I wait for a friend.

My tummy is telling me it is time to eat lunch. I have had a wonderful morning, even if a friend did not pass by. No, that is not right. I have had friends with me all this time. The comfortable tree, the whispering wind, the dancing leaves, and the playful clouds have kept me company and been my friend.
