Sarge and Waylon have been given a free map to help them enjoy their Winter Tour! Before unfolding it, they read the cover:
Boats & Bergs
On the only island part of the tour, the pets are picked up at the landing stage by a horse-drawn sleigh and are driven through snowy pines to board their awaiting boat which will take them on the main part of the day's adventure. They will see mountains, icebergs, fun little sandy or rocky coves, swathes of trees lining the coast, snowy island villages and will be enthralled towards the end by the tale of the spooky Troll Lake ... those of a nervous disposition will find exploring the night's accommodation will lift their spirits however! It is a beautiful house with a log fire to warm their paws by while they wind down for the night with mugs of hot chocolate.

@ Sunrise Wood
Waddles was studying her map for the current tour. "Why don't we have a word like hygge in English, Sarge?"
“Well, I don't know, Waddles. I guess if we don't have a word for something, we borrow it from another language. There's lots of examples, I reckon."

Picture the quiet of this wood as you travel through it, the sleigh following previous tracks, the only sounds in the stillness being the muffled clop of the horses' hooves, the jingle of the harness and the swish of the runners through the snow.

@ Ornate Ice Shards
Phimi ツ was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Sarge unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking Phimi ツ’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” snapped Phimi ツ. “We’re about to pose beside this amazing scene—the picture will be of your map if you don’t fold it up PDQ!”
Ornate Ice Shards
The sheer perfection of these shards of ice under magnification show the beauty of Mother Nature's design! Each shard stands like an ornate little spear or pinnacle, yet is made of nothing but frozen water!

@ Snow Scene Sunrise
“You know what Ratty said in Wind in the Willows, Sarge?” said Shadow.
"No, what was that?"
"He said, 'there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats'," said Shadow. "He's right!"
Snow Scene Sunrise
The start of a new winter day, with the sun rising and reflecting off the snow crystals which clad the ground, making them glitter in the early morning. Later on, perhaps the snow on the benches will have melted and be occupied by pets taking a rest from their winter snow activities.

@ Lonesome Road
“I’ve written a postcard to Mrs Eucalyptus about this amazing Huskies, Hijinks and Hygge experience!” said Sarge. “She’ll wish she were here! Where’s the nearest postbox?”
b-rok shielded his eyes and rotated 360°, elaborately scanning the horizon. “I don’t know how it comes about, but they appear not to have thought to provide a postbox here, Sarge. How remiss of them!” Seeing Sarge’s ears beginning to droop, b-rok added, “Don’t worry, you can post your card after this leg of the Experience!”
Lonesome Road
This road stretches for mile after endless mile but with that breath-taking mountain view to admire, the time will fly past!

@ Snowboat
“Hey, have you seen what the next stop is, Sarge?” said John. "It looks fantastic!"
"I'll get my camera ready," said Sarge.

This sturdy bateau will take the icy waters in her stride and all a pet has to do is find the best vantage point for admiring the scenes all around! Oh, and keep out of the captain's way, of course!

@ Grey Peaks
“A picture of this would look lovely printed on Christmas cards, wouldn't it, Sarge?” Daisy said.
“It certainly would, Daisy!" said Sarge.

Looming up ahead out of the water are the stern, forbidding, desolate peaks shrouded in mist that clearly show the harsh landscape in wintertime.

@ Marram View
“Ooh, it's just starting to get a bit cold, Sarge!” said Pony Pony. “Can you hold my map while I dig out my gloves?"
Sarge good-naturedly took charge of Pony Pony's possessions while he emptied his rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a door key, some shopping receipts, a screwdriver, a bottle of multivitamins, a lottery ticket and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the gloves right at the bottom. These he donned and then Sarge helped him put everything back in his rucksack.

Marram View
As the sun sets and casts its lingering rays on the sea, there can be no better place for entering a meditative state than beside Marram View, whatever the season.

"It's very nice indeed—but you never know, the next leg of the tour might be even better!" said Sarge.

The autumnal hues of trees on these crags turn slowly to winter foliage and the snowy peaks above them brood down over them in the absolute stillness of water.

@ Idylllic Waterway Retreat
“It would be great fun to camp in the snow overnight, wouldn't it, Snowball?” said Sarge."In the morning you'd fill your kettle with snow and boil it suspended from a tripod of sticks, like they do in books."
Snowball shivered. “What books, Sarge? Those written by Baden-Powell? I think I'd rather have my creature comforts indoors, thank you."
Idylllic Waterway Retreat
What a blissfully idyllic place this would be to live! Imagine steering your boat from place to place and berthing at a landing stage rather than a driveway! With its backdrop of white-topped mountains, a foreground of peaceful waterway, and distinctive houses plus a church with a high steeple, this is certainly a lovely place.

Sarge was very happy to meet Chelsey here! They shook paws and both swapped tales of their experiences of their travels so far!

Sarge opened his rucksack to find his hat. Huntley could see Sarge had a beret, a balaclava, a cricket cap, a Tam o' Shanter, a woolly bobble hat, a beanie, a deerstalker hat and a Peruvian chullo!
“Did you bring a Stetson too?” Huntley asked Sarge.

What does this conjure up in your imagination? Playing in the sea on a sunny day? Skiing fast downhill and throwing up a fine spray of slush? Lazing on the lawn on a baking hot day with the water sprinkler going?

“Hey, have you seen what the next stop is, Sarge?” said Esmerelda. "It looks fantastic!"
"I'll get my camera ready," said Sarge.

Brrrr! A lot of pets would baulk at taking a dip in this lake, with patches of ice floating on top! But wrap up warm, and it's the perfect spot for tarrying a while, as the ripples from the birds' feeding activities spread outwards and the light starting to fade a little from the sky.

“Let's hope Foxy doesn't get as seasick as he did that time on Crocodile Creek, Sarge!” said Lucifer.
"Well, he's in good company, Lucifer," replied Sarge. "Admiral Nelson was a chronic sufferer, as well as Horatio Hornblower."
"Hornblower was fictional, Sarge!" Lucifer pointed out.
"Well—whatever," responded Sarge. "It took time for him to get his sea legs on every trip."

There's plenty of space on deck in the open air for those pets willing to brave the chill wind! Otherwise there are plenty of seats in the covered lounge area below. But make sure you emerge in time to wave to the welcoming party on terra firma!

The snow-clad mountains are perfectly mirrored in the still, calm grey waters of the lake. This wintry lake has the clear transparency of quartz and is a place to meditate.

We note the Norwegian influence on this spooky body of water—Troll Lake! Who knows what legends have been passed down over the centuries ... watch out if you dip your paws or flippers in there, especially after sunset and the lake is shrouded with mist!

A scene of chocolate box prettiness! Night-time in an Alpine village, under a clear starry night with snow thickly coating the roofs of chalets and pine trees with snowy peaks in the distance. It's time to hunker down by the wood burning stove with hot drinks and raclette.

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse? So romantic!" mused Sarge, lying back on a boat deckchair in the indoor lounge.
"Well, I don't know," said Ailfric. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Ailfric considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Sarge is tired out and ready to go home when Carruthers comes along. "Wow! You find a special prize!" says Carruthers. Sarge turns round and found it was just behind them!
