The Mouse in Trousers is always ready to help a pet in need of advice. Madam Snowflake went to see him, hoping for tips on how to win the Art Challenge. But whilst she was there, who should turn up but Sam the Turtle, renowned leader of the Power Pets Sports Club?

The mouse knew Sam well, and said nothing, but went to close the door.

We got very ... close ... but the next day I had to leave the city. She said she would meet me at Orly airport, but she never turned up. I had to catch the plane. Now I feel bad; I made no effort to stay in touch."

Madam Snowflake went out of the door, but the mouse laid a paw on Sam's shoulder and held him back. "This is a serious matter," said the mouse. "If you find your daughter, you must be ready to apologise to her, and she may be very angry with you. Do you really want everyone to know about this?"
"Your advice changed my life," said Sam. "I now know what it is to be cared about. I must accept my responsibilities or I may as well never come out of my shell again."

Madam Snowflake led Sam to the trail of beans. But by the time they got there, Sam was already tired. "I have been around a long while," he said. "I am very old for a pet. This trail goes on for miles. Will you help me to find my daughter? I will give you my last 20 GM if you lead me to her."

They had not been there long when a rabbit wandered by. "Do all these beans come from this beanstalk?" asked Sam.
"What beans?" asked the rabbit. "I haven't seen any. If you want to see beans, you should climb the beanstalk. But there are Sky Trolls at the top. They are too heavy to come down, and I've got too much sense to climb up. If you mean to go up, I'm leaving!

The rabbit left. Sam turned to Madam Snowflake. "Friend, you have done all I can ask of you," he said. "Take the 20 GM I promised you and go home. I will face the danger alone."
Madam Snowflake thought how the old turtle was willing to brave dangers just to say he was sorry to someone who probably hated him; she could not leave old Sam to struggle up the beanstalk alone. "I'm coming. Keep the money, I want to see the view!" she said. Madam Snowflake was too moved to say she wanted to help.

Oh, what a view it was! A light mist of rain continually fell from the cloud and created a permanent rainbow that shimmered over the lands below. Madam Snowflake did not get to see much of the view, as he was too busy shoving on Sam's shell; the old turtle would never have made it without his help.

At the top of the beanstalk there were indeed more beans; heaps and heaps of them! Sam looked all around. At first he looked old and defeated. Then he shouted, "I have followed the beans!"
Madam Snowflake was upset to see the old turtle make a fool of himself over a fantasy, but respect for her elders kept her from saying anything.

Then out from behind the pile of beans came a purple otter. Before Madam Snowflake or Sam could say anything, she threw her arms around Sam and cried out, "daddy!"
Madam Snowflake had an enormous lump in her throat, and could not find the words to ask: how did the otter know Sam was her father?

"But why not just visit me and announce yourself?" asked Sam. "Would you have believed me?" she asked. Sam thought hard. "Well actually, no," he said. "Your message made me ask myself whether I might have a daughter."
"I was raised on the cloud by my mother," said Samantha. "She only told me about you when I turned 18 this week."

"I've watched Power Pets for YEARS from up here. But she never told me Sam was my father until this week. I was so angry she went white with shock!"
As they approached Samantha's home, an old white goose rushed out of the house with a suitcase. "My dear!" shouted Sam; but she was gone before anyone could stop her.

They went outside again whilst Madam Snowflake took care of the baby. "I would love to live up here and have a view like this," said Sam. "I am tired out. I can't face going down that beanstalk again."
To his surprise, Samantha asked him endless questions about Power Pets. As she did so, he realised she knew more about his job than he did!

"Just come and see me once a week, dear," said the old turtle. "And we can talk about the league tables together!"

Sam has never been happier. He can live out his whole retirement in free accommodation, as the baby will still be a baby for another hundred years. The view is wonderful, and whenever he wants to he can not only enjoy sport from the best free seat in existence, he can bask in the happiness that comes from seeing a daughter improve what her father started.

They were getting angry and accused Samantha of capturing old Sam, when a voice spoke, seemingly from heaven; "this is my daughter, in whom I am well pleased." Some said it was Sam; the rest of the pets just ran home because they were too scared to argue! Madam Snowflake has completed the quest!
