Meet Egregious, thus named by his fond mother as she considered he "stood out from the flock". Never had there been such a remarkable son! (The collective noun for emus is of course "mob", but Egregious's mum wasn't so very keen on the term.) (Latin "e" ("from") and grex, gregis, 3rd declension—"flock")

Egregious' next visit was to the collared dove. "When the eggs are laid, we male emus are from then on totally responsible for incubating the eggs and raising the chicks. Send the missus out to work, eh, what?" The collared dove, a peaceable creature, merely replied that she and her mate took turns incubating the eggs by day and night.

"Here's a riddle for you!" said Egregious to the coot. "What do you have in common with the bald eagle of the United States of America?" "We're both ... birds," replied the coot, somewhat curtly. Perhaps she was tired of humans describing hairless males of their species as "bald as a coot". Egregious smirked triumphantly. "In Old English," he explained, " 'bald' meant 'white', as in a piebald pony being black and white. So the white patch on your forehead was described as white, and the bald eagle has a head that is entirely white, albeit feathered. It's interesting, isn't it?" All the coot was interested in at that particular time was whether she and her mate would be able to find enough food for their impending new family. "Riveting," she said.

Startled out of her contemplative doze, the swan reared up and hissed at him: "Holler at me like that one more time, you ridiculous emu, and I'll come over there and break your neck!" "Aw, it's your first time, is it? You'll feel fine once this is all over. Toodle-pip!" Egregious left, just in time.
