@Acropolis, Athens

Athens was their next destination, a city that seemed to have been plucked from the pages of a history book. The pets were excited as they approached the grandeur of the Acropolis. The ancient citadel rose above the city like a crown of marble and stone that bore witness to the power and wisdom of the civilisation that had once called it home. The coach pulled up to the base of the hill, and they all piled out, stretching their legs and squinting against the bright sun.

@Ancient Wall, Athens

The air was filled with the scent of sun-baked earth and the distant hum of the city. They began the ascent, the path winding upward through the remnants of ancient walls and ruins. Their paws tapped out a steady rhythm on the stone steps. As they climbed higher, the city sprawled out below them, a tapestry of white and blue, with the occasional splash of green from the rooftop gardens.

@Greek Engraving

"You'll have seen we use a different alphabet in Greece!" Dimitri chuckled. "Some are the same as in the Roman alphabet that you use. For example, capital A and B are alpha and beta. Many Greek letters are used in maths and science. Other countries in Europe that don't use the Roman alphabet are Cyprus, Russia, Georgia, Belarus, Bulgaria and Armenia."

@Athens, The Parthenon

The Acropolis loomed above, its marble columns gleaming like bones picked clean by time. Arcturus's heart raced as he took in the grandeur of the Parthenon, the majesty of the Propylaea and the stoic watchfulness of the Erechtheion. The ruins spoke of power and beauty, a monument to the gods that had once looked down upon the city from their lofty perch.

A sculptures exhibition was a short walk away, in a quiet courtyard surrounded by tall, ancient walls. The air was cooler here, and the sound of the city was a gentle murmur. As they entered the courtyard, they were met with a sight that took Gil's breath away. Rows of sculpted heads lined the space.

@Columns, Athens

They were a testament to the artistry and obsession with beauty that had characterised Greek culture for millennia. The heads were a pantheon of gods, heroes and mythical creatures, each with a story etched into its marble countenance. The pets felt as if they had stumbled upon a frozen moment in time, the inhabitants of a lost world frozen in silent conversation.

@Greek Inscription, Selçuk, Ephesus

"You know," Dimitri said, his gaze drifting over the horizon, "the Greeks weren't just masters of art and war. They had a way with words, too." He paused, his feathers ruffling slightly in the breeze. "If you visit Selçuk in Ephesus you'll find the Library of Celsus, a monument to knowledge and wisdom. There, inscriptions speak of the importance of learning and the power of stories."
Hedwig and Aunt Bee piped up eagerly. "We went to Turkey three years ago!"

Dimitri paused by another inscription. "Here in the second line we have an omicron, upsilon, omega, nu, tau, iota, epsilon, etc. The third line starts with alpha, then gamma. Of course, the lower case letters can look completely different."

@Acropolis

The inscriptions spoke of battles and victories, of love and loss, and of the eternal struggle for power. Aunt Bee, having made notes as Dimitri explained about the Greek language earlier, tried to make sense of the ancient Greek letters, her eyes darting back and forth as she murmured the words to herself. "It's like a puzzle," she exclaimed, "each piece fitting perfectly together to tell a story that's been waiting to be read for thousands of years."
