“It says here that maple syrup is a good source of manganese and zinc, and that it has 15 times as much calcium as honey,” announced Neveah.
Bindy considered this. “That sounds like a good reason to have some more poured over our breakfast porridge, Neveah!”

Another opportunity to meet a Canada Goose, with her offspring! In recent years, Prince Edward Island has been an important migration stop for the Canada Goose in both spring and autumn.

From across the road, soriyah surveyed the current stop on their map. “Would you fancy living there, Neveah?”
"Well, it's certainly a bit different to where we live," said Neveah. "But I could get used to it, I daresay!"

While Prince Edward Island is known for its splendid coastline and farming communities, its capital, Charlottetown, is home to Victorian government buildings and the modern Confederation Centre of the Arts, with a theatre and art gallery.

“Here, wrap my scarf around yourself," replied Neveah. "And you can look forward to a lovely mug of hot chocolate when we get back to our accommodation!"

"Lunaray! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Neveah in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Neveah!" said Lunaray soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

@ North Rustico, PEI
“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like this one pictured in our itinerary in Nova Scotia? So romantic!" mused Neveah, nibbling on a taffy lolly.
"Well, I don't know," said Sweetie pie. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Neveah considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."
North Rustico, PEI
North Rustico is a charming fishing village just five minutes from Cavendish, home of the Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Site. It's a must-see location for all fans of Anne of Green Gables!

"I've bought so many souvenirs already my backpack's almost full!" said Chicklet.
"Me too!" said Neveah. "It's great on this tour, isn't it?"

“What have you got in your rucksack, Bella?” asked Neveah. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Neveah,” responded Bella. “There’s canvas deck shoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, sandshoes, walking boots, sandals, loafers—you name it, I’ve got it!”

Beachcombing is a soothing activity which involves combing the shoreline to see what objects of interest you can see. This could be shells, pebbles, seaglass or even something more unusual! Beaches can be very specific in what they collect, due to currents, geography and offshore habitats. Some beaches are good for driftwood, others for mermaid’s purses.

“’Maple syrup is made from the xylem sap of maple trees. The trees most commonly used are sugar maple, red maple and black maple because of the high sugar content in the sap,’” read out Shadow from the brochure.
“It’s making me hungry, Shadow!” declared Neveah. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”

"Oh yes, we're bound to. Gosh, Neveah, do you remember those sharks, and the octopus as well? Poor Fresco took one look and hid in the bottom of the boat!" responded Midnight.

“Shall we stop and eat our packed lunch here, Neveah?” asked Serena .
“Yes, it seems a good spot, Serena! Let's perch on those tree stumps there! I can't wait to sink my teeth into those slices of bannock!"

The blue jay is found throughout most of Canada, with the exception of the far west of the country. It is the provincial bird of PEI. The blue jay’s vivid cobalt or azure-blue tail and wing feathers make an exotic contrast against brown leaves or green grass. However, these feathers are not truly blue, as blue pigment is unknown in birds. The blue jay’s feather colour results from refraction, or distortion, of light by a peculiar inner structure of the feather substance.

"Good scheme! I'll dig mine out as well," said Neveah.
Northern Cardinal
A great number of birds, including the Northern Cardinal and Blue Jay, have evolved to remain in Canada throughout the year. Many flock together, sometimes with other species, and huddle to help retain heat. This also reduces the need to watch out for predators. Most remain active by feeding on nuts, dried fruit, seeds, twigs and branches in the vegetation. Many of these species flock to bird feeders, where they supplement their diet with fatty items.

Nova Scotia, which is Latin for "New Scotland", is home to the largest Scottish Gaelic-speaking community outside of Scotland and their flag is a reversal in colours of Scotland's, consisting of a blue saltire on a white field. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay.

“A picture of this would look lovely printed on Christmas cards, wouldn't it, Neveah?” Pekoe said.
“It certainly would, Pekoe!" said Neveah.
Peggy's Point Lighthouse
Peggy's Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and an enduring image of Canada. Situated within Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, it is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the province and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and is situated on a granite outcrop at Peggy's Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. The red and white lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognisable lighthouses in the world.

@ Coastal Jetty
“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Neveah!” said lady ciganko. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Neveah good-naturedly took charge of lady ciganko's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Neveah helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

Imagine all the boating parties that have set off from this secluded location in Nova Scotia with its own tiny beach! It's just the thing for a leisurely rowing boat trip followed by a small barbecue!

“What have you got in your tote bag, Jasper?” asked Neveah. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Neveah,” responded Jasper. “There’s deck shoes, snowshoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, flippers, walking boots, Wellington boots—you name it, I’ve got it!”
Bras d'Or Lake
Bras d'Or Lake is an estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

“Pass me the binoculars, Neveah!” said Flicka. "I think that's a Northern Cardinal just taking off over there! They stay in Canada all year round, you know."

“Oh hello, Neveah!” cried Flare. “Didn’t we bump into each other at the Fiat racetrack in Turin last month? This is quite the change of scene, isn't it?”

When you've done rowing round the coastline in your colourful boat, pull up an equally colourful chair to relax by this small bay! Nova Scotia has an incredibly long coastline compared to its overall size due to all its ins and outs, so there are numerous tiny inlets and bays all around the island.
