Magnolia begins her tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

Magnolia and Thimbl were entranced on reaching this Canadian viewpoint and eagerly posed for a picture standing on either side!

Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like these ones pictured in our itinerary for the Maritime provinces? So romantic!" mused Magnolia, sipping a leisurely fruit juice.
"Well, I don't know," said Bolly. "It's not all about drinking orange juice and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs to operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Magnolia considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Magnolia and Pyron Toothless came across each other in the hotel bar. "Hey, Pyron Toothless, what are you going to have?"
"I thought I'd try Canada’s national cocktail, the Caesar, Magnolia. It's made of vodka, clamato juice, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce."
Magnolia looked puzzled. "What's clamato juice, Pyron Toothless?"
"Tomato juice with clams and chilli!"

Refreshing blue waters of the Avalon shoreline stretch for miles in either direction, don your bathing attire and take a swim, it's not nearly as cold as one might think!

Once a "huge" town of 345 residents, back in 1940, the population has dwindled to about 90 in 2016! So if it's a quiet place of solitude to come to and contemplate the meaning of life, this is the place for you!

"Have you seen this in our travel brochure, Magnolia? There's a town in Vancouver Island called 'Youbou'—the founders of its mill, Mr Yount and Mr Bounton, combined the first halves of their respective surnames to make Youbou in 1914."
Mini grinned and thought about it for a minute. "I guess it's like Waitrose in England, from Mr Waite and Mr Rose."
"Waitrose isn't a town, though, Mini."

“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Magnolia!” said Choose a name. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Magnolia good-naturedly took charge of Choose a name's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Magnolia helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
