The first painted eggs came from Mesopotamia, and because eggs were forbidden food during Lent, people painted eggs while Lent was being observed—after Lent, they would eat the eggs on Easter Day.

Beautifully decorated eggs “pysanka” are associated with Ukraine, and the oldest painted egg that was unearthed in northern Ukraine is dated to the end of the 17th century.

Ugie was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Bovin unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which it succeeded in knocking Ugie’s sunhat off.
“Put that away, do!” said Ugie, in some irritation. “We’re about to pose with this amazing creature—the picture will be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

Waddling in the cool waters off the coast of South Africa, dressed up in their best black tie, the little penguins keep a sharp eye out on the waves, you never know when you'll have a surprise visitor!

“Do you remember our last safari, pinkguick?” exclaimed Bovin. "I remember being really quite scared, trying to find the way out of that labyrinth in the dark!"
pinkguick agreed. “D'you remember that scorpion? It was quite a shock coming across him in the light of the dim and flaring lamps, although he turned out to be very nice in the end.”
"It's hard to believe that was two years ago, pinkguick," remarked Bovin.

“Ooh, it's just starting to get a bit cool, Bovin!” said Misty. “Can you hold my map and itinerary while I dig out my scarf?"
Bovin good-naturedly took charge of Misty's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches wrapped in greaseproof paper, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of chocolate peanuts, a paperback thriller, a bottle of orange squash, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old bus tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a door key, some very old receipts, a screwdriver, a bottle of multivitamins, a lottery ticket and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and salad cream before locating the scarf right at the bottom. This she donned and then Bovin helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

“You never know what sort of critter to expect next, do you, Hearts?" whispered Bovin. “You know, small, cute and furry or really quite, um, large, with—er—very sharp teeth.” Hearts reassured Bovin that all the critters were looking forward to meeting them, regardless of size, furriness, attractiveness and/or pointiness of teeth.

Translucent in color, these colorful creatures anchor themselves to the roots and rocks in the warm waters in the Indian River. Just don't startle them, they don't respond well!
