Hamish Gregor and T.C. are excited to find out what is in store for them in the Autumn Experience! As they enter, they each receive a free map! It reads:
Autumn in Red
Fall foliage in striking hues of red and orange will be seen all around on this tour along the riverbank. Your pet can collect pine cones, sample wild berries and currants, view beautiful plants in purple and red, and perhaps spot some exotic birdlife! Everypet will enjoy lingering on the bridge to view the peaceful scene as the sun goes down turning the river pink as it does so ...
PnF Meeting House
Before we begin the journey we need to check-in here to pick up a trail map and some travel snacks. Be sure to sign the register with how many are in your travel party and how long you plan to be on the trail. Don't forget to take a potty break before you head out!

Episode 2/25

@ Sleepy River Sunrise
Hamish Gregor was in a hurry to move along and shake some more paws, but Orchid decided to stay where she was for a while, and sketch the scenery for this week's Art Challenge!

The sun is just beginning to illuminate the sky, casting a warm glow on the sleepy river and the sleepy pets in the village. We begin our journey early in the cool of the day as the PnF weatherpet has predicted an unusually warm autumn day ahead.

@ Sunrise Silhouette
While Hamish Gregor stood drinking in the amazing view, Doctor Hoo searched in her backpack for her camera, eager to capture the scene!

As the sun continues to rise and the chill of the morning gives way, some of the hikers begin to shed their warm jackets and stuff them in their packs. A lone plant is dramatically silhouetted in the sun's golden light.

@ Autumn Stillness
Hamish Gregor and Beatrice, having shaken paws, got so engrossed in conversation about the beautiful scenery that they had to hurry along so as not to be left behind! They regretfully bade au revoir and auf Wiedersehen to each other!

As we behold the beauty of the golden leaves in the nearby trees, some clouds have rolled in, obscuring the sun for a bit. Some small fish in the river below are dining on insects that skim along the surface, creating little ripples on the calm water.

@ Orange Splendor
Hamish Gregor and Wawatay had shaken paws and took some time to enjoy the super view in a companionable silence!

The glorious colors of autumn overflow in profusion along the trail prompting a chorus of 'oohs' and 'ahs' among the travelers. We pause and stare in rapturous awe for a moment before proceeding.

@ Ginger Root
“These are great as a cake flavouring,” said Hamish Gregor.
“You can add it to savoury dishes as well. It’s very versatile,” observed Blaze.
Ginger Root
Ginger root is a well-known natural remedy for some common ailments. If you are prone to stomach upset and indigestion, nibbling on a small piece of raw ginger or drinking ginger tea can help alleviate your symptoms. But it is most useful on the journey as it helps your body to recover from muscle soreness after over-exertion. It will definitely come in handy today!

@ Japanese Maple in Orange
Hamish Gregor and Dilly shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Hamish Gregor. “Let’s change sides.”
“No,” said Dilly. “This is my best side.”

An important reminder when one is out on an adventure: remember to look up! There is so much beauty around us, we don't want to miss any of it, especially when it is something as wonderful as the sun's rays filtering through the orange leaves of this Japanese Maple tree.

Hamish Gregor had to travel on alone, as Belle IbKat declared she had found paradise, and had no intention of moving on!

See, glancing upward occasionally does have its benefits! As we continue along the trail we see a different variety of Japanese Maple, no less beautiful than the orange one. A treat to our eyes, this one is adorned in a fabulous crimson red.

@ Delightful Dahlia
“You know, Cicero said 'If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need',” mused Morri.
"I don't think I've met Cicero," said Hamish Gregor. "Is he on this tour?"

The PnF gardener has done a fabulous job landscaping along the trail. Pots of flowers have been placed throughout to display an array of vivid autumn colors. This deep pink hued dahlia is delightful!

“My uncle grows these in his back garden,” observed Hamish Gregor.
“Wow! He must surely have green fingers!” replied tigg.

@ Nectar Delight
"I think I'll take a cutting of the plant in that tub over there," said Hamish Gregor. The label says it's 'vigorous' and 'fearless'."
Yay sniffed. "That's gardeners' talk for 'an invasive species that will take over your entire garden if permitted'!"

Be still and maybe it won't see you. Look over there on that red flower. It's a Micronesian Myzomela, and I almost didn't see it as it is somewhat camouflaged by the wispy red flowers it is sipping nectar from.

@ Red Berries
"How on earth do you identify what this is from the thousands of things it could be?" asked Pynelope.
"Well," said Hamish Gregor, "you go through a checklist. Like what sort of leaves does it have, how are they arranged on the stem, do they have stalks, what's its habitat; that kind of thing. I'll lend you a book when we get home."

@ Basket of Pine Cones
“I’m going to try growing these at home!” announced Hamish Gregor, after he and matty had tucked into some yummy organic harvest food!

According to the note attached to the basket, each of us is supposed to take a pine cone and plant the seeds in the designated area ahead. A park ranger will give us instructions when we get there. A pine forest covered in fresh snowfall is one of the most beautiful sights to see in winter. I'm happy to help add to that beauty!

“Oh hello, Hamish Gregor!” cried Innes. “Didn’t we bump into each other at Crocodile Creek a while ago?”

@ Autumn Rose Bouquet
"Azure Beauty, was that last one we looked at a thorn bush with roses? Or a rose bush with thorns?" asked Hamish Gregor.

The unmistakable fragrance of roses captures my attention as I leave the wooded area. I look down to see a beautiful arrangement of autumn-hued roses in a white ceramic pot.

Hamish Gregor was very happy to meet Rianna here! They both swapped tales of their experiences of their travels so far!

2020 and Hamish Gregor, after shaking paws, admired the crop of harvest produce in front of them. “I didn’t know it looked like that just after harvest,” said Hamish Gregor. “I’ve only seen it in the shops!”

@ Shiny Redcurrant Berries
“Hey, Finn!” called out Hamish Gregor. “Come and have some of this—it’s delicious!”
Finn was glad to rest and enjoy the food Hamish Gregor shared with him.

Wild redcurrants can be found all over the countryside. They look temptingly sweet to eat, but these shiny red berries are usually made into redcurrant jelly because of their tartness.

“I’m going to ask if I can take a cutting of this,” Choose a name said to Hamish Gregor. “This would look just fine in a half barrel in my front garden!”

Growing on the side of the bridge is a mass of deep red and purple leafy vines. Deep blue berries hang in bunches just waiting to be eaten.

Two beautiful waterlily dahlias in a vase create the perfect simple, yet elegant look. The stunning large blooms need no other adornment.

@ Teasels and Carnations
“Isn’t this amazing, Darby?” declared Hamish Gregor. “I’m seeing so many flowers and shrubs that I’ve never seen before!”

Teasel weeds are a very common roadside plant. They look beautiful for being a weed, don't they? They are a favorite among crafters as they can be dried and painted any color. These lovely bi-color pink carnations pair perfectly with the purple painted teasels.

"This is a glorious specimen, lily", observed Hamish Gregor. "What a shame that in a month or so all this colour will be gone!"
"You know the best way to get colour in your garden all year, Hamish Gregor?" said lily. "Buy a garden gnome!"
