Tarzan begins his tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

“I'm enjoying the tour very much but it's getting quite cold, isn't it, Tarzan?” shivered Bahama.
“Here, wrap my scarf around yourself," replied Tarzan. "And you can look forward to a lovely mug of hot chocolate when we get back to our accommodation!"

Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

“It says here that maple syrup is a good source of manganese and zinc, and that it has 15 times as much calcium as honey,” announced Tarzan.
Cuddles considered this. “That sounds like a good reason to have some more poured over our breakfast porridge, Tarzan!”

Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

"Have you seen this in our travel brochure, Tarzan? There's a town in Vancouver Island called 'Youbou'—the founders of its mill, Mr Yount and Mr Bounton, combined the first halves of their respective surnames to make Youbou in 1914."
Snuggles grinned and thought about it for a minute. "I guess it's like Waitrose in England, from Mr Waite and Mr Rose."

Once a "huge" town of 345 residents, back in 1940, the population has dwindled to about 90 in 2016! So if it's a quiet place of solitude to come to and contemplate the meaning of life, this is the place for you!

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like these ones pictured in our itinerary for the Maritime provinces? So romantic!" mused Tarzan, sipping a leisurely fruit juice.
"Well, I don't know," said Velveteen. "It's not all about drinking orange juice and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs to operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Tarzan considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Driftwoods abound the shore lines of Newfoundland, begging to be taken home and used as an art sculpture in the yard. Alas, how to get it in the boot of the car? And oh, yes, clear customs? Better leave it and take a photo instead!

“Let's just drink in this scene, shall we, Tarzan?” suggested Rowan, sinking down on a convenient tree stump.
Tarzan agreed it was well worth spending some time there!

When the tide is low, you'll want to see if there are tidal pools of life nestled in the rocks here, but be sure to watch your paws, as the briny kelp can add to the slickness of the rocks here.

The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Rowan, after he and Tarzan had spent some time exploring another long country track to its end.
"Is there a gift shop downtown?" queried Tarzan. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."

In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
