Monay begins her tour of "Maples, Moose & Mounties - Newfoundland & Labrador" by downloading a map of specially chosen locations!
Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

Cindy was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Monay unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which she succeeded in knocking Cindy’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said Cindy, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”
Newfoundland The Battery at St. John
Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

“What have you got in your rucksack, Mimosa?” asked Monay. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Monay,” responded Mimosa. “There’s canvas deck shoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, sandshoes, walking boots, sandals, loafers—you name it, I’ve got it!”

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like these ones pictured in our itinerary for the Maritime provinces? So romantic!" mused Monay, sipping a leisurely fruit juice.
"Well, I don't know," said Scaredy Cat. "It's not all about drinking orange juice and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs to operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Monay considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

"Bearnadette! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Monay in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Monay!" said Bearnadette soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

Gone walking about the Peninsula, a traveler will surely find the beauty and harshness of the coastline, coming upon different coves, windswept and barren, except for the sturdy grasses growing there.

“It’s making me hungry, Nano!” declared Monay. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”

The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

In the most Eastern limit of the Bay of St. George, you'll find this town sports the Barachois Search and Rescue, which assists with water rescues and searches of those in distress. Not for the faint of heart, for sure, but a rewarding profession!

"It must be so romantic working producing maple syrup, Monay," said PluttiPott contentedly sipping grape juice after a hard day’s sightseeing. "Imagine going from tree to tree to collect the sap every summer and seeing it turned into delicious syrup!"
"Hmm—now imagine being up at dawn in the cold winter with a great deal of complicated equipment,” said Monay. “The work doesn’t stop.”
PluttiPott waved his glass. “I’ll have staff to do all that,” he said. “I’ll just do the easy bits.”

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
