Melbourne is the city with the highest population of Greeks outside of Greece. With over 400,000 Greek Australians living here, it is said to be the third-largest Greek city in the world behind Athens and Thessaloniki. The suburb of Oakleigh is known as "the Greekest place outside of Greece!”

Williamstown was considered for the capital of the new colony at Port Phillip; Melbourne was chosen for the abundance of fresh water.
