Sally arrived for the Singleton Pets Three-City Valentine Event and pausing on the bridge looking at the majestic exterior of the hotel felt very nervous. Perhaps she shouldn't have come? This was for braver souls than she was! But then, screwing up her courage, she finished crossing the bridge and entered the hotel.

Sally very much enjoyed the fondue they shared that night! It was lovely to partake of such an iconic and delicious Swiss recipe, and juggling forkfuls of bread dipped in cheese sauce broke the ice amongst all the pets!

The view from her room was absolutely beautiful. The next morning Sally felt her spirits rising as she happily regarded the seagulls flying low over the lake outside.

While Sally was waiting for breakfast time, she heard a gentle tap at the door. It was a sweet little bear clutching a gift of a rose, and taped to the stalk were details of the delights for the day ahead! Sally felt she had made her first friend in Switzerland!

It was their first expedition in Lucerne and to Sally's horror, it was a cable car trip! Oh no! Heights were awful! To overcome her fear, she concentrated on talking to the pets on either side of her and taking careful note of their answers. Luckily this seemed to work!

Sally gulped at the view from the top. Never, she felt, had she ever been so high up before! It was like being in an aeroplane looking down at the clouds! But she knew at the same time it was going to be a very treasured memory in future, so she made an effort to think of something other than her nerves.

They stopped for an al fresco picnic. It was cold but the air was very fresh and it felt healthy. Sally had to sit with her back to the deep drop just past the line of fir trees. Then she decided to confide in the tour guide about her fears, and the guide's sympathetic, calm good sense made her feel a lot better.

The group, under careful supervision, tackled a spot of mountain climbing. Sally nearly backed out of the activity, but talked herself round, reassuring herself that it was perfectly safe at this beginner level!

Sally was a little late for lunch, having taken a nap, and searched for her group. A waiter approached bearing menus. "Willkommen," he said. "Haben Sie Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeite?" Sally gasped, wishing she had brought her German dictionary! "Um ... ", she ventured. Fortunately the tour guide hurried over. "He's just asking if you have any food intolerances. Never mind! Come, we're over here."

The tour guide related the famous story of William Tell; the arrow shot into the apple on his son's head, & a lot more. The next activity was archery. Sally was nervous as she felt she had two left paws when it came to sport and didn't want to look incompetent in front of the others. But she didn't back out and in the end performed quite well!

That afternoon the group went for a walk along the lake. Sally realised she was getting much more exercise than she normally would, and bravely resolved, when she got back home, to do at least some exercise every single day, even if it was just five minutes!

Sally and the rest of the group were invited on board a paddlesteamer for a tea party! They were served with delicious light snacks followed by a selection of cheeses, whilst enjoying the scenery on either side of Lake Lucerne. They were all sorry when it ended!

In the evening they had been invited to a Swiss dancing event, in which they would take part. Sally hated the thought of this! If only she had a good friend to go with! But she bravely put her best paw forward. After all, if she was the worst of all of them, at least she would be giving others more confidence!

The next day, they all took part in an orienteering activity. Sally was in charge of reading the compass, and she accidentally sent them all south instead of north! But she bravely owned up to her mistake, and to her surprise no one minded at all -- they were having too much fun for that!

At elevenses time, the tour guide took them for Kaffee und Kuchen at a very grand-looking Schloss. Sally felt nervous about being in such a magnificent setting, and perhaps being spoken to in German! But she discussed her fears with a few fellow-guests in the group and realised she could be brave and just possibly enjoy the event!

A hike had been planned as a little excursion. Sally really didn't feel like going; she was so tired after all the previous activities that day. As she was dragging her hiking boots over her paws, she decided to be brave, and to explain to the tour guide that she just didn't feel up to it. The guide was very understanding, and Sally realised that she wasn't the only one not feeling quite up to the hike!

The Swiss claim to make the best chocolate in the world, and the people of Lucerne proudly claim to make the best chocolate in Switzerland! The pets visited a chocolate making factory in Lucerne and most purchased a delicious souvenir of their visit!

Sally hired a car to take a few of the pets on a tour of the city. This meant she had to gather all her courage together to negotiate driving in a strange city, where some of the traffic signs were in German and wholly unfamiliar, and distances were in kilometres!

Switzerland was an amazing country of lush green meadows of chocolate-box prettiness, majestic snow-capped mountains and beautiful lakes. As they neared the end of their tour, Sally decided it would be well worth coming back!
