Newfoundland Fort Amherst
The original fort dates back to the 1700's but you won't find remnants of that here today, but you'll still be able to see the gunnery and some of the artifacts from World War II, when Fort Amherst was part of keeping the German U-Boats away. The current lighthouse on the Fort was constructed after the war and stands as a warning beacon to the ships at sea.

Considered the welcome wagon of St. John's, the Battery is located at on the Signal Hill area, and seafarers pass the neighborhood before reaching St. John's proper.

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Layla, after she and Amelia had spent some time exploring another long country track to its end.
"Is there a gift shop downtown?" queried Amelia. "The thought of that generally keeps me going."

Layers of sedimentary rock create a cake-like display on the cliffsides of King's Cove. Geologists adore travelling here to see the layers of rock, formed over millions of years to study.

“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like this one pictured in our itinerary in Nova Scotia? So romantic!" mused Amelia, nibbling on a taffy lolly.
"Well, I don't know," said Lady Thea. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Amelia considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."

Once a "huge" town of 345 residents, back in 1940, the population has dwindled to about 90 in 2016! So if it's a quiet place of solitude to come to and contemplate the meaning of life, this is the place for you!

Amelia good-naturedly took charge of Alvin's possessions while he emptied his rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This he donned and then Amelia helped him put everything back in his rucksack.

Driftwoods abound the shore lines of Newfoundland, begging to be taken home and used as an art sculpture in the yard. Alas, how to get it in the boot of the car? And oh, yes, clear customs? Better leave it and take a photo instead!

Amelia and Nano came across each other in the hotel bar. "Hey, Nano, what are you going to have?"
"I thought I'd try Canada’s national cocktail, the Caesar, Amelia. It's made of vodka, clamato juice, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce."
Amelia looked puzzled. "What's clamato juice, Nano?"
"Tomato juice with clams and chilli!"

Gone walking about the Peninsula, a traveler will surely find the beauty and harshness of the coastline, coming upon different coves, windswept and barren, except for the sturdy grasses growing there.

"Oh yes, we're bound to. Gosh, Amelia, do you remember those sharks, and the octopus as well? Poor Fresco took one look and hid in the bottom of the boat!" responded Donna.

The beaches at Stephenville are littered with things left after the tide rolls out. They say one man's trash is another's treasure. You'll find bits of interesting debris padding along here. Different rocks and glasses, worn smooth by the constant tumble of the sea.

Broken Boardwalk
Sometimes being one of the most popular destinations around comes with downsides. In this case, the heavy daily use of the boardwalk has resulted in broken boards in need of repair. Visiting pets hope the boardwalk will be fixed soon.
Labrador Ice Berg
Traveling all the way from Greenland, icebergs can be seen off the coast of Labrador, sailing under their own power, with a destination only they know. You're lucky to see them gliding on the current, full of ice of ages untold.
