In this part of the travel game, the pets delve into Bohemian culture in the area of the city that attracts painters, writers, musicians, sculptors and others who express themselves through art. Whether the pets spend time discussing philosophy in one of the many quaint bars or observing the creation of a masterpiece in a tiny, paint splattered studio apartment, or viewing huge graffiti pictures, they will wind up their visit with a trip to some underground cellars before ending the day with the opportunity to purchase some flowers or an elaborately decorated ridotto mask!

This open air café is just the place to gather with your friends to drink coffee and chat about your artistic endeavours, such as making music, writing books or poetry, singing, dancing, drawing, painting or sculpting.

From across the road, Webbly eyed the attraction they had just left. “I don't know, Bonnie,” he said. “Would you call that art?”
"Oh yes, I daresay," said Bonnie airily. “We just don't understand it, I expect.”

Flip Flop Flap was still mulling over a previous attraction. “All that paint coming off, and the crumbling stone! And they call it art?"
"Oh, Flip Flop Flap, you need to really feel and appreciate the different textures!" replied Bonnie, a trifle condescendingly.
Flip Flop Flap sniffed. ”That's like saying you should butter your toast with your bare paw," she said. “You know, really appreciate those crumby, buttery textures (!)”
18th Arrondissement Bistro
Situated in a lively narrow street packed with bars, restaurants and cafés and thronging with artists of all types rubbing shoulders in the milieu of aesthetic innovation, this bistro is a splendid place to have a bite to eat and to take in the local colour before sallying forth—perhaps to have your portrait painted or your silhouette cut out and pasted on card!

Lady Thea scrabbled in her rucksack for her folding camping chair. “What are you doing with that, Lady Thea?” asked Bonnie. “There's a lot of the tour left to go!”
"I just want to stay here a little while and chill out to the sound of that heavenly mandolin. You go ahead if you want, I'll catch you up!" said Lady Thea.

A delicious colour palette of warm umber, sienna and terracotta softened in tone by the passage of sun-baked months and years, while the living greenery and roses add a vibrancy to the outside of these dwellings.

Bonnie is enjoying Fantastic Buildings when Joonie comes along. "Look! A special prize!" says Joonie. Bonnie looks down and sees something valuable. Joonie generously lets Bonnie keep it!

Bonnie was listening enraptured to the piano music by the wall. “My dad used to play this, Triple Shot!” he exclaimed happily. "Sobre las Olas or Over the Waves. This takes me back!"

The artists' quarter is known for inexpensive living for a creative or freelance lifestyle, nameless small rooms with bare walls, recycled furniture and good cooking, the type of aesthetic now replicated the world over. It maintains both an edge and an underground.

"I think there'll be quite a few tired paws, wings and flippers when we get back to the tour bus," said Flip Flop Flap, after she and Bonnie had spent some time exploring another long, narrow alleyway to its end. "Is there a gift shop at the end? The thought of that generally keeps me going."

In Spanish a barrel is called a “tonel” and the weight of a full barrel is 1 ton. It is the same in English where the origin of the word “ton” is “tun” a wooden wine vessel. A tonelada referred to the space needed for a tonel of liquid in a ship.

“What did you think of that last thing we looked at, Rufus?" asked Bonnie.
"I don't know, Bonnie,” Rufus said. “I don't know anything about art. I don't even know what I like!”

These small windows are a delightful mix of ornate metal decoration contrasting with the smooth curves of the earth tone frames, all set off by the duck egg blue of the walls. This soft greenish blue stems from the first discovery of a blue pigment in the 18th century, which was then lightened with white.

"I don't know about you, Bonnie," said Princess. "But I'm really looking forward to having a drink at Jay & Puddle's bar when we've completed our tour!"
Bonnie agreed. ”There's something about looking at a bunch of art fixtures that makes me very thirsty, Princess!" she said.

The artists' quarter is known for its vibrant use of colour and this little road is no exception. Cerulean walls baked over the years by the sun to a more muted but no less beautiful shade make this house stand out!

Bonnie and Kitty shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Bonnie. “Let’s change sides.”
“No,” said Kitty. “This is my best side.”

Here the surface qualities of the water play a fundamental role in giving the composition of the architecture a final effect—acting in this case not as a perfect mirror but by giving a diffuse touch to the colour and texture of the reflected houses.

“You wouldn't know from this side of the wall what there is on the other side, would you, Bonnie?” Sam said, perusing the route map.
“Yes, it's a complete change of scene!” said Bonnie.

This beautiful remnant of thick stone wall of earth tones with its arch over weatherbeaten yet ornate wooden doors serve as a proud rejection of the characterless and purely utilitarian. "We're really spoilt for choice when it comes to cafés and bars, aren't we, Bonnie?" said Meowchi.
"I'm not sure about Jay & Puddle's, though, Meowchi. It sounds like there's the mother of all riots going on in there!" said Bonnie.

Well-worked graffiti art is typically bold, creative and colourful. It changes the character of the area where it appears. In many cases this is positive, since graffiti art can turn dull monotone buildings and bare walls into interesting and eye-catching exhibitions of the imagination. High-quality graffiti contained within a particular area can raise that neighbourhood's profile as an arts scene. In time, other artists flock there, and the cultural value of the area is increased. This can in the long-term aid the local economy, as tourists head to the area to look at the graffiti, and locally-run tours pop up to show visitors around.

Stained glass is an art form that has been in use since mediaeval times and we tend to associate it with church windows, a riot of bright colours illustrating a narrative. This example has the feel of industrial architecture about it, with its regular rectangular glass panes and muted colours but is nonetheless beautiful.

Sweetie pie and Bonnie paused to watch a pavement artist painting the portrait of one of their fellow-travellers. “Hi, Foxy!” called out Bonnie excitedly.
Startled, the artist dropped his loaded brush on the ground, sending drops of paint flying in Sweetie pie and Bonnie's direction!

Odyssey examined the wares in the art supply shop. “I feel inspired, Bonnie,” he said. “I think I'll take up painting as a hobby. It can't be that difficult, surely?”

Wide, sweeping, traditional stairs, ultra-modern floating steps, brightly painted, perspex, see-through risers, steps that provide storage or perhaps steps that light up? Would you go for stairs that have a slide incorporated for quick and easy access to a crash mat at the bottom? These stairs, with their quiet cream and brown colouring, and multistorey stairwell view ever upwards, create a definite vibe.

Venetian Masquerade Mask
Handmade by Italian artisans, the Venetian masquerade or Joker mask has a long history. Venice is a city of romance and high fashion and the masks have always held a sense of mystery. Venetians were famous for hiding their identity and taking risks both in business and in love. The wearing of masks at balls and masquerades spread and they would be worn in Mozart's Salzburg and at fashionable Georgian London ridottos.
