Hoover opened his rucksack to change his hat. Finley could see Hoover had a large, floppy sunhat, a balaclava, a rain hat, a woolly bobble hat, a beanie, a deerstalker hat and a swimming cap!
“Did you bring a fez too?” Finley asked Hoover.

@ Solicitous Mum
Boci was distracted by the sounds of loud rustling as Hoover unfolded a very large tourist map, in the course of which he succeeded in knocking Boci’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” said Boci, irritated. “We’re about to pose on either side of this amazing scene—the picture will all be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

Another opportunity to meet a Canada Goose, with her offspring! In recent years, Prince Edward Island has been an important migration stop for the Canada Goose in both spring and autumn.

“If there's time at the end when we get back to the hotel tonight, I might do some initial sketches for a watercolour painting," Chamaeleon said, offering Hoover a maple syrup toffee from the bag and then unwrapping one for herself.
“That sounds like a good plan, Chamaeleon!" said Hoover.

While Prince Edward Island is known for its splendid coastline and farming communities, its capital, Charlottetown, is home to Victorian government buildings and the modern Confederation Centre of the Arts, with a theatre and art gallery.

Hoover was listening enraptured to strains of music reaching them from a street violin player. “My mum used to sing this, Jimmy!” he exclaimed happily. "Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. This takes me back!"

North Rustico is a charming fishing village just five minutes from Cavendish, home of the Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Site. It's a must-see location for all fans of Anne of Green Gables!

“How do you spell ‘Saskatchewan’, Hoover?” mused Supahfly, clutching a postcard and sucking the end of his pen. “Is it a “c” or a “k” in the middle? I can never remember!”
“Simples,” grinned Hoover. “Put an ‘S’. Now put Ask At Chew An and Bob’s your uncle.”

Beachcombing is a soothing activity which involves combing the shoreline to see what objects of interest you can see. This could be shells, pebbles, seaglass or even something more unusual! Beaches can be very specific in what they collect, due to currents, geography and offshore habitats. Some beaches are good for driftwood, others for mermaid’s purses.

@ Trip in a Trap
“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Hoover!” said Silky. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Hoover good-naturedly took charge of Silky's possessions while he emptied his rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This he donned and then Hoover helped him put everything back in his rucksack.

@ Canadian Blue Jay
“Wouldn't it be lovely to live in a lighthouse like this one pictured in our itinerary in Nova Scotia? So romantic!" mused Hoover, nibbling on a taffy lolly.
"Well, I don't know," said Edina Pop. "It's not all about drinking coffee and gazing at the sea. You have to run up and down stairs, operate the light and the foghorn, and there may be no running water or electricity apart from a generator."
Hoover considered this. "Mine would be a luxurious, converted, non-operational lighthouse, then."
Canadian Blue Jay
The blue jay is found throughout most of Canada, with the exception of the far west of the country. It is the provincial bird of PEI. The blue jay’s vivid cobalt or azure-blue tail and wing feathers make an exotic contrast against brown leaves or green grass. However, these feathers are not truly blue, as blue pigment is unknown in birds. The blue jay’s feather colour results from refraction, or distortion, of light by a peculiar inner structure of the feather substance.

A great number of birds, including the Northern Cardinal and Blue Jay, have evolved to remain in Canada throughout the year. Many flock together, sometimes with other species, and huddle to help retain heat. This also reduces the need to watch out for predators. Most remain active by feeding on nuts, dried fruit, seeds, twigs and branches in the vegetation. Many of these species flock to bird feeders, where they supplement their diet with fatty items.

"NUTTER! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Hoover in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Hoover!" said NUTTER soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"
Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia, which is Latin for "New Scotland", is home to the largest Scottish Gaelic-speaking community outside of Scotland and their flag is a reversal in colours of Scotland's, consisting of a blue saltire on a white field. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay.

Peggy's Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and an enduring image of Canada. Situated within Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, it is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the province and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and is situated on a granite outcrop at Peggy's Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. The red and white lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognisable lighthouses in the world.

“I don't know how to pronounce half of these place names, Hoover!” said DaiDai ruefully.
"Never mind," said Hoover. "We'll look them up when we get back!"

Bras d'Or Lake is an estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

Yarmouth is a port town in Nova Scotia, whose industries include fishing and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Portland, Maine. It was formerly a major shipbuilding centre.

Hoover and Mae came across each other in the hotel bar. "Hey, Mae, what are you going to have?"
"I thought I'd try Canada’s national cocktail, the Caesar, Hoover. It's made of vodka, clamato juice, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce."
Hoover looked puzzled. "What's clamato juice, Mae?"
"Tomato juice with clams and chilli!"
We All Live in a Yellow Rowing Boat
When you've done rowing round the coastline in your colourful boat, pull up an equally colourful chair to relax by this small bay! Nova Scotia has an incredibly long coastline compared to its overall size due to all its ins and outs, so there are numerous tiny inlets and bays all around the island.

“Let's hope Foxy doesn't get as seasick on these Canadian lakes as he did on Lake Windermere in England that time, Hoover!” said Felix, studying the future itinerary.
"Can you get seasick on a lake?" asked Hoover.
"Oh yes, indeedy," said Felix.

Lighthouses are a common sight along the Nova Scotia coastline and remain an important symbol of the past. They beautifully highlight the picturesque coastal landscape. Some are open for viewing while others can be observed when passing on foot or on bicycle.
