@ PnF Meeting House
Derry and Midnight are excited to find out what is in store for them in the Autumn Experience! As they enter, they each receive a free map! It reads:
Autumn in Red
Fall foliage in striking hues of red and orange will be seen all around on this tour along the riverbank. Your pet can collect pine cones, sample wild berries and currants, view beautiful plants in purple and red, and perhaps spot some exotic birdlife! Everypet will enjoy lingering on the bridge to view the peaceful scene as the sun goes down turning the river pink as it does so ...
PnF Meeting House
Before we begin the journey we need to check-in here to pick up a trail map and some travel snacks. Be sure to sign the register with how many are in your travel party and how long you plan to be on the trail. Don't forget to take a potty break before you head out!

Episode 2/25

@ Sleepy River Sunrise
Tasi shook paws with Derry and was just enjoying the view when she was distracted by loud rustling as Derry unfolded a very lengthy Autumn Experience itinerary, in the course of which she succeeded in knocking Tasi’s hat off. “Put that away, do!” snapped Tasi. “I’m about to take a photo of this amazing scene—the picture will be of your map if you don’t fold it up pronto!”

The sun is just beginning to illuminate the sky, casting a warm glow on the sleepy river and the sleepy pets in the village. We begin our journey early in the cool of the day as the PnF weatherpet has predicted an unusually warm autumn day ahead.

@ Sunrise Silhouette
Derry and Sebastian shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Derry. “Let’s change sides.”
“No,” said Sebastian. “This is my best side.”

As the sun continues to rise and the chill of the morning gives way, some of the hikers begin to shed their warm jackets and stuff them in their packs. A lone plant is dramatically silhouetted in the sun's golden light.

Episode 4/25

@ Autumn Stillness
The quiet and serenity of the next scene made Derry and Scaredy Cat feel like they were the only pets left in PnF Land ...

As we behold the beauty of the golden leaves in the nearby trees, some clouds have rolled in, obscuring the sun for a bit. Some small fish in the river below are dining on insects that skim along the surface, creating little ripples on the calm water.

@ Orange Splendor
Derry and Kitty, having shaken paws, got so engrossed in conversation about the beautiful scenery that they had to hurry along so as not to be left behind! They regretfully bade au revoir and auf Wiedersehen to each other!

The glorious colors of autumn overflow in profusion along the trail prompting a chorus of 'oohs' and 'ahs' among the travelers. We pause and stare in rapturous awe for a moment before proceeding.

@ Ginger Root
“Great to meet you again, Winnie ~ Gentle Friend!” said Derry. “Come and have some of this farm-grown organic food—it’s absolutely yummy!”
Ginger Root
Ginger root is a well-known natural remedy for some common ailments. If you are prone to stomach upset and indigestion, nibbling on a small piece of raw ginger or drinking ginger tea can help alleviate your symptoms. But it is most useful on the journey as it helps your body to recover from muscle soreness after over-exertion. It will definitely come in handy today!

@ Japanese Maple in Orange
“Oh hello, Derry!” cried Princess. “Didn’t we bump into each other at Crocodile Creek a while ago?”

An important reminder when one is out on an adventure: remember to look up! There is so much beauty around us, we don't want to miss any of it, especially when it is something as wonderful as the sun's rays filtering through the orange leaves of this Japanese Maple tree.

"Do you know what this place needs, Derry?"
"No, Sour Puss, what does it need?"
"Nothing, Derry. This scene is flawless!"

See, glancing upward occasionally does have its benefits! As we continue along the trail we see a different variety of Japanese Maple, no less beautiful than the orange one. A treat to our eyes, this one is adorned in a fabulous crimson red.

@ Delightful Dahlia
"I wish I knew more about horticulture, Bones" said Derry. "Sometimes I can't tell if something's a plant or a weed!"
"Oh, there's a sure-fire way of telling the difference, Derry! Pull on it—if it comes out of the ground easily, it's a really valuable plant.”

The PnF gardener has done a fabulous job landscaping along the trail. Pots of flowers have been placed throughout to display an array of vivid autumn colors. This deep pink hued dahlia is delightful!

@ Marvelous Magenta Flower
"This is a glorious specimen, Silver", observed Derry. "What a shame that in a month or so all this colour will be gone!"
"You know the best way to get colour in your garden all year, Derry?" said Silver. "Buy a garden gnome!"

@ Nectar Delight
“I’m going to have to spend a lot of time when we get back looking up what all these flowers are!” said Derry to Sweety.

Be still and maybe it won't see you. Look over there on that red flower. It's a Micronesian Myzomela, and I almost didn't see it as it is somewhat camouflaged by the wispy red flowers it is sipping nectar from.

@ Red Berries
Shamika bent down to sniff the flower in front of her but recoiled hastily. “What’s up, Shamika?” asked Derry.
“There’s a huge bumblebee on it!” said Shamika.

@ Basket of Pine Cones
“I’m going to try growing these at home!” announced Derry, after she and Helga had tucked into some yummy organic harvest food!

According to the note attached to the basket, each of us is supposed to take a pine cone and plant the seeds in the designated area ahead. A park ranger will give us instructions when we get there. A pine forest covered in fresh snowfall is one of the most beautiful sights to see in winter. I'm happy to help add to that beauty!

@ Magnificent Maple
“What an amazing view!” exclaimed Derry after shaking paws with zora, who agreed with her. Derry was excited to meet up again with zora. They both took a moment to admire the amazing scene around them.

@ Autumn Rose Bouquet
“These make a fine display, don’t they, Derry?” said Midnight, when he and Derry had shaken paws.

The unmistakable fragrance of roses captures my attention as I leave the wooded area. I look down to see a beautiful arrangement of autumn-hued roses in a white ceramic pot.

Derry and Pandette were entranced at reaching this stopping place and eagerly posed for a picture!

“I hope we can buy more of this at our local farmer's market,” observed Derry, as she and Esmerelda tucked into a delicious food sample!

“I’m going to ask if I can take a cutting of this,” Silky said to Derry. “This would look just fine in a half barrel in my front garden!”

@ Shiny Redcurrant Berries
“This reminds me of Meadowlands,” observed Derry, musing as she and Wee Willie took a moment to admire the produce beside them. “Such a lovely, peaceful scene.”

Wild redcurrants can be found all over the countryside. They look temptingly sweet to eat, but these shiny red berries are usually made into redcurrant jelly because of their tartness.

purple and Derry shook paws and then they both admired the magnificent floral display beside them.

Growing on the side of the bridge is a mass of deep red and purple leafy vines. Deep blue berries hang in bunches just waiting to be eaten.

Choose a name bent down to sniff the flower in front of her but recoiled hastily. “What’s up, Choose a name?” asked Derry.
“There’s a huge bumblebee on it!” said Choose a name.

Two beautiful waterlily dahlias in a vase create the perfect simple, yet elegant look. The stunning large blooms need no other adornment.

@ Colorful Berries
"I think I'll take a cutting of the plant in that tub over there," said Derry. The label says it's 'vigorous' and 'fearless'."
Starlight sniffed. "That's gardeners' talk for 'an invasive species that will take over your entire garden if permitted'!"

@ Teasels and Carnations
“I’m going to have to spend a lot of time when we get back looking up what all these flowers are!” said Derry to Oscar.
Teasels and Carnations
Teasel weeds are a very common roadside plant. They look beautiful for being a weed, don't they? They are a favorite among crafters as they can be dried and painted any color. These lovely bi-color pink carnations pair perfectly with the purple painted teasels.

Derry is enjoying the Autumn Experience when Porcini comes along. "Look! A special prize!" says Porcini. Derry looks down and sees something valuable. Porcini generously lets Derry keep it!
