"Flax! Chef said he's making beaver tails for our packed lunch tomorrow!" whispered Zoey in agitation. "How horrid! We can't eat those!"
"Relax, Zoey!" said Flax soothingly. "It's a sugary pastry in the shape of a beaver tail, sprinkled with cinnamon or with jam spread on top! No pets are harmed!"

“Oh wow, Zoey, there's a butterfly!” BUDDHA cried out.
“It looks like a Great Spangled Fritillary," replied Zoey knowledgeably.

Another opportunity to meet a Canada Goose, with her offspring! In recent years, Prince Edward Island has been an important migration stop for the Canada Goose in both spring and autumn.

“What have you got in your rucksack, Choose a name?” asked Zoey. “It looks very full!”
“I’ve come prepared for anything, Zoey,” responded Choose a name. “There’s canvas deck shoes, tennis shoes, flip-flops, sandshoes, walking boots, sandals, loafers—you name it, I’ve got it!”

While Prince Edward Island is known for its splendid coastline and farming communities, its capital, Charlottetown, is home to Victorian government buildings and the modern Confederation Centre of the Arts, with a theatre and art gallery.

@ Red Sand Beach
“Ooh, it's just starting to drizzle, Zoey!” said Koo. “Can you hold my torch and map while I dig out my Pac-a-Mac?"
Zoey good-naturedly took charge of Koo's possessions while she emptied her rucksack of a pack of sandwiches, a Thermos flask, a pair of galoshes, a bag of toffees, a paperback novel, a bottle of mineral water, an address book, some postage stamps, an assortment of different coloured biros, a bottle opener, a couple of old train tickets, a handful of golden and silver moles, a hotel key, some shopping receipts and a selection of rather battered sachets of salt, sugar and tomato ketchup before locating the Pac-a-Mac right at the bottom. This she donned and then Zoey helped her put everything back in her rucksack.

"Well, it's certainly a bit different to where we live," said Zoey. "But I could get used to it, I daresay!"

“Let's hope Foxy doesn't get as seasick on these Canadian lakes as he did on Lake Windermere in England that time, Zoey!” said Marty Mole, studying the future itinerary.
"Can you get seasick on a lake?" asked Zoey.
"Oh yes, indeedy," said Marty Mole.
North Rustico, PEI
North Rustico is a charming fishing village just five minutes from Cavendish, home of the Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Site. It's a must-see location for all fans of Anne of Green Gables!

"Do you think we'll see some elk like we did on Snow Beach that time, DaiDai?" asked Zoey.
"Oh yes, we're bound to. Gosh, Zoey, do you remember those sharks, and the octopus as well? Poor Fresco took one look and hid in the bottom of the boat!" responded DaiDai.

“Let’s pose with one of us each side of this attraction and I’ll set the self-timer to take a shot,” said Zoey to Melancholy Mae. “It’ll be a fab souvenir of our time here!”

Beachcombing is a soothing activity which involves combing the shoreline to see what objects of interest you can see. This could be shells, pebbles, seaglass or even something more unusual! Beaches can be very specific in what they collect, due to currents, geography and offshore habitats. Some beaches are good for driftwood, others for mermaid’s purses.

"Wasn’t it worth coming all this way, Zoey," said Flapke, "for this experience alone?"

The blue jay is found throughout most of Canada, with the exception of the far west of the country. It is the provincial bird of PEI. The blue jay’s vivid cobalt or azure-blue tail and wing feathers make an exotic contrast against brown leaves or green grass. However, these feathers are not truly blue, as blue pigment is unknown in birds. The blue jay’s feather colour results from refraction, or distortion, of light by a peculiar inner structure of the feather substance.

Zoey and Joe shook paws, said “How do you do?” and posed for a souvenir photo. “Why am I always on the left?” grumbled Zoey. “Let’s change sides.”
“No,” said Joe. “This is my best side.”
Northern Cardinal
A great number of birds, including the Northern Cardinal and Blue Jay, have evolved to remain in Canada throughout the year. Many flock together, sometimes with other species, and huddle to help retain heat. This also reduces the need to watch out for predators. Most remain active by feeding on nuts, dried fruit, seeds, twigs and branches in the vegetation. Many of these species flock to bird feeders, where they supplement their diet with fatty items.

@ Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
“’Maple syrup is made from the xylem sap of maple trees. The trees most commonly used are sugar maple, red maple and black maple because of the high sugar content in the sap,’” read out Felix from the brochure.
“It’s making me hungry, Felix!” declared Zoey. “Perhaps I’ll just nibble a corner of one of the maple syrup scones the hotel packed us for elevenses!”
Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia, which is Latin for "New Scotland", is home to the largest Scottish Gaelic-speaking community outside of Scotland and their flag is a reversal in colours of Scotland's, consisting of a blue saltire on a white field. Peggy's Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay.

“I don't know how to pronounce half of these place names, Zoey!” said Trixie ruefully.
"Never mind," said Zoey. "We'll look them up when we get back!"

Peggy's Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse and an enduring image of Canada. Situated within Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, it is one of the busiest tourist attractions in the province and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard and is situated on a granite outcrop at Peggy's Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. The red and white lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognisable lighthouses in the world.

“You know, I'd like to spend a whole week in this province here, Zoey!” said Dai.
"It's very pleasant indeed—but you never know, the next part of the tour might be even better!" replied Zoey.

Zoey and Kyma came across each other in the hotel bar. "Hey, Kyma, what are you going to have?"
"I thought I'd try Canada’s national cocktail, the Caesar, Zoey. It's made of vodka, clamato juice, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce."
Zoey looked puzzled. "What's clamato juice, Kyma?"
"Tomato juice with clams and chilli!"

Imagine all the boating parties that have set off from this secluded location in Nova Scotia with its own tiny beach! It's just the thing for a leisurely rowing boat trip followed by a small barbecue!

Bras d'Or Lake
Bras d'Or Lake is an estuary in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has a connection to the open sea, and is tidal. It also has inflows of fresh water from rivers, making the brackish water a very productive natural habitat. It was designated the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2011.

Yarmouth is a port town in Nova Scotia, whose industries include fishing and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Portland, Maine. It was formerly a major shipbuilding centre.

When you've done rowing round the coastline in your colourful boat, pull up an equally colourful chair to relax by this small bay! Nova Scotia has an incredibly long coastline compared to its overall size due to all its ins and outs, so there are numerous tiny inlets and bays all around the island.

"Hey, look at Shuswap in the brochure," said Fiddlesticks. "'The city's new claim to fame: the world’s largest treble clef. It is more than 42 feet (13m) high!'"
"Wow! Is there music to go with it?" asked Zoey.
"Yup. The first notes of O Canada," responded Fiddlesticks.
"That's a lovely tune!"
Nova Scotia Lighthouse
Lighthouses are a common sight along the Nova Scotia coastline and remain an important symbol of the past. They beautifully highlight the picturesque coastal landscape. Some are open for viewing while others can be observed when passing on foot or on bicycle.
