It's Halloween week which means Scaredy Cat, Bob and friends have a lot of fun adventures planned. Bob has been doing some research into Halloween activities and shared with Scaredy Cat how it all began around the 7th century known as All Saints Day or All Hallows Eve which has merged into modern day Halloween. "Wow, I didn't realize it's been around that long" replied Scaredy Cat. "So going door to door started back then too?" "That started in the middle ages as the poor people would visit the houses of wealthier families and receive pastries called soul cakes in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the homeowner’s deceased relatives. Eventually it was picked up by children as an early form of trick or treating." "I bet you would have loved that" Scaredy Cat said to Bob. "Bob chuckled and said "I still do! Want to hear some more?" "Of course I would, responded Scaredy Cat. "Well, by the 19th century, carving faces into vegetables started in Ireland and Scotland from an Irish myth so people started carving scary faces in turnips, potatoes or pumpkins to frighten away evil spirits. Pranks became associated with the Irish Potato Famine and then by the 1930's Haunted Houses became a thing in the United States followed by Halloween costumes going mainstream." "Wow, I had no idea,” said Scaredy Cat. "We better get busy with all these different activities!"
