Sh! Please don’t tell anyone that you have seen me. I stay hidden in the shadows, concealed in the underbrush of the forest. My feathers, in dappled shades of brown, offer camouflage amongst fallen autumn leaves – a boon to be sure. For some strange reason that still bewilders me, those strange two-legged things always try to hunt me in the fall. The life of a fugitive is not easy. Always on the run, ever vigilant for danger, never settling into a comfortable home of my own. The upside of my clandestine life is that I have formed alliances with burrowing animals, who are also no friends of the two-legs. I dwell in badger setts, rabbit warrens, and mole tunnels. Aren’t birds supposed to live in the sky?

Pounce!!!!! I got you bug! I’m going to grow up to be a great hunter! All birds, lizards, and eggs better watch out for me! For now, my dad says to start small, like with bugs. He also tells me not to play with my food…I can’t help it though! Look at that cute little beetle! I’d rather play hide and seek with him, than eat him. It’s hard for me to EAT the bugs I play with, so I let my parents find me dinner for now. I’m already great at pouncing, so I know I’ll be a good hunter! Are you ready bug? It’s my turn to hide! You count to ten and then come find me! Ready..GO!

I am a unique little reptile. My skin can change colors for many reasons; my emotions, the temperature, and the amount of light available, but it is a common misconception that it changes color based on my surroundings. The brighter my color, the more attractive I am (sorry, I'm cute and I know it... and you know it too!). My tail is great for wrapping around the branches of trees and bushes to steady myself as I wander throughout the rainforests and savannas I live in, but if you don't mind, I can also wrap it around your heart and be your forever friend.

Boing! Boing! Boing! That’s the sound I make everywhere I go – jump, slide, jump - it’s just so much fun! Even if I trip a little, I get right back up and Hop! Leap! Run! Whooo-oooo... whooo-oooo... Hallo! Anyone need something haunting? I'm just whoooooo you need to give a bit of atmosphere to your stately ruin or crumbling castle. Zombie apocalypse? Whatever do you mean? I’m just your average everyday squirrel, though I may be a strange shade of green. I gather my nuts for the winter, from the dark forest and the plains…my very favourites are walnuts, because they look like….braaaaaaains……

Often I spend my nights watching the horizon, the soft silhouette of trees and mountains against the deep sky. I spend most of my life alone, that's how we have always been...but is that what I want? As a child, hidden away in our burrow, my parents told me over and over how I would outgrow my need to be around others. We are solitary creatures. Nothing was a stronger reminder than when I was left alone, forced to find a new burrow to call home. I have made my way in life. I have learned to hunt and climb trees, I know how to avoid those pesky foxes, I have even taught myself to swim. Yet I still watch the night sky and wonder what life would be like with others. Do you have an answer for me?

Legend has it that when the air turns chilly and the nights grow long, you can hear the song of the Enchanted Snowbird, echoing through the juniper trees, calling the frost and the ice to come nestle under her wings. She soars upon the clouds of December and brings with her the first magical snowfall of the season. The longer she lingers, the colder it gets, so as beautiful as she is, you may not want her to stay too long, or you might not thaw out until next year!

Terrible Toad: The terrible toad is found in the deepest bogs and the swampiest bayous, nestled among the muck and the grime of countless whispered incantations and the pluck of a thousand eyeballs from the heads of gators caught mid … snap. Used in various potions and poultices, the terrible toad can bring about any manner of luck … or calamity. Careful now, some of these adorable amphibians are not as cute as their color implies. Something about the slime they secrete, or was it the poison laced around their whiplash tongues? Er, nevermind, carry on.

Whoa - stay back! Despite my fluffy pink locks, I am NOT a tasty treat! (I promise!) My heritage is very bizarre, or so I'm told. Supposedly my great-grandmother gave birth under a secluded cotton candy bush, and wrapped the little lamb in cotton candy to keep warm. But then she couldn't get the cotton candy off! She washed and cleaned and ate, but there was always cotton candy left. Then she learns from Frank the reason that bush is separate from the rest - the cotton candy was too clingy to be around pets.

Well, years passed and no matter what was tried, the cotton candy stuck. Then my grandfather's little lambs came out with cotton candy already on them! And now here I am, third generation in of cotton candy sheep. Believe me, learning to walk when you don't really have knees is straining, but I managed! I found out my parents are expecting another little lamb, wonder what colour it will be. Green? Blue? Maybe purple...

I'd love to have someone to chat with for a while, pets often pass my meadow quickly to reach their destination. They don't pause to smell the flowers and enjoy the scenery I call home.

If you want to have this friendly Octopi move in next door, there is nothing more alluring than an unkempt garden. The Garden Octopi has a favourite pastime of caring to neglected gardens, filling them with healthy plants, attracting a wide variety of life. Early on I discovered that I was different than other kitties. Not only was I cuter and prettier than they were (it takes a lot of work to be beautiful and to make sure to apply my whisker-lash every morning for essential, thick looking pink whiskers) but I could FLY! It's difficult to hide away with all this cuteness, but add in my mad ninja fighting skills and very soon I was in demand, helping other young cats and kittens from the evils of the worlds! All cats must be protcted from wicked mice, hair ties, and string balls. I could easily spot a cat in trouble from the air! Flying is AWESOME and I don't mind sharing the sky with my counter parts, bats, as well as other flying creaturees. I am the first known feline Superhero of the world! I love helping others- as long as I do not break a nail doing it.

Oh, WOW! You're serving mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, garlic and herb roasted carrots, brussels sprouts with bacon, cornbread stuffing, sautéed spinach with garlic, and buttery dinner rolls ... but those are all sides! I am king of the jungle and proud to say so! Lions are quite social compared to other big cats, and we lions live in prides. Did I say 'pride'? I am vain and I will flaunt my bountiful mane around other males, so that they know I am the one who is King.

I will admit though, I am quite lazy, and while I spend almost 20 hours of the day sleeping, I make sure the females are out hunting for the rest of us! But hey, I’m allowed to be whatever I want, right? I am King, after all!

When you think of a Griffin you may think of a mythical beast that is quite terrifying and guards treasures. I don’t believe I would terrify anyone, I am far too pink and cute. Instead of standing around guarding things, which sounds so dreadfully boring, I think it would be much better if we played some games and enjoyed some tasty snacks.

I’m not blue, but you may be if you touch me. Tiny, I am so tiny, only about 2 to 1.8 inches (3-4.5 cm). I am a vibrant blue with black spots so I am not easy to miss. Yes, I am poisonous to the touch and that is bad news, but there is good news. If you want to have me in your life, it is simple, provide me a home, and feed me crickets and fruit flies.

The poison comes from the insects I eat out in the wild and those insects have been nibbling on poisonous plants, so if you don’t feed me those types of insects I will be safe to have as a friend. This might be the start of a never-blue friendship.

Shh! Somepet is coming - don't let them see you!

I enjoy playing small pranks on unsuspecting pets - creeping in the shadows and behind furniture to leave belongings scattered around. Building blocks in the middle of a clean room in half-built structures, bicycles left out in the yard, bitten cookies left behind on the kitchen counter... I sneak around and move little things here and there to make the other pets wonder.

My favourite activity is to show up at the tea parties of young pets - Oolong is my preferred tea when available. The faces of young pets as what they think is a toy comes to life makes my heart sing! (And I always get a good laugh when the parent comes in to find I've already left.)

I am a mineral penguin, made from a variety of pretty minerals that give my body a colourful mirrored effect. I am dazzling to see in the sun. Maybe you should wear your sunglasses, and then we can tour some mines.

Hummmm… Bzzzzzzzz… If you are outside cat-napping on the porch and hear what sounds a bit like a bumblebee, have no fear; it’s only a little hummingbird. I’ve just stopped by to have a few sips of the perfectly sweetened sugar-water in the feeder. Thank you for not putting any coloring in it. I prefer it that way; nectar in flowers is clear and it is better for my health to have a natural diet. Due to the rapid beating of my wings I am in constant need of sugar for energy and I have the unique ability to turn nectar into fuel within thirty minutes.
I like my sugar-water to be clear but that doesn’t mean I don’t like color in other places, like my beautiful feathers. My exotic coloring is in vibrant shades of indigo, ranging from vivid blue to ultraviolet, and is accented by my stunning teal tail feathers. And I just love the way my feathers look iridescent in the sunlight. My beauty goes much deeper though. I am a very thankful bird and I will remember where your feeder is after my long migratory flight back from Central America. I will stay in your yard all summer and even bring my babies to see you and show them how nice you are.
