During the last 30 years there has been a surge in the applications of rare earth elements and their alloys in several technology devices such as computer memory, DVDs, rechargeable batteries, autocatalytic converters, super magnets, mobile phones, LED lighting, superconductors, glass additives, fluorescent materials, phosphate binding agents, solar panels and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents. The most abundant rare-earth element is cerium, which is actually the 25th most abundant element in Earth's crust, having 68 parts per million (about as common as copper).

There are 17 metallic elements that make up the rare earths. You will find them, with the atomic numbers 21, 39, and 57–71, in the middle of the periodic table. These metals have unusual fluorescent, phosphorescent, conductive and magnetic properties—which make them very useful when alloyed, or mixed, in small quantities with less uncommon metals, such as iron.

Like many Commonwealth countries, Australia's flag depicts the Union Jack. The large Commonwealth Star beneath the Union Jack represents the Australian States and Territories, and the Southern Cross refers to Australia's geographical location.

These clouds are so inviting, fluffy and soft. I wonder how it would feel to walk upon the clouds. Would the feet sink deep into the cloud or would your feet skim lightly across the top? Would you become tired like you do if you walk for a long time on the ground, or would you be able to walk and never tire, no matter how far you went?

Two red hearts flying high are a joyful sight, and flying kites is always such a fun pastime. The day is clear, and the breeze is steady—let’s join these happy people and fly some kites of our own.

Where do I want to be? Under the sea. The water is warm the fishes are darting around in colourful schools—nibbling a bit of plant here and there.

Exotic tropical fish and other critters who live on the water, such as a frog on a lilypad, a dignified swan and a heron at daybreak on a misty river, plus man's best friend enjoying a swim start off our collection of images celebrating the element Water. We can see a cute little ladybird apparently drinking from a raindrop! There are also misty, dew-rimmed flowers. fronds and fruit, and of course, beautiful aquatic sights such as a waterfall and ice floes.

Rays of light seek out the ocean depths, illuminating sea life and creating a dreamy atmosphere. Will you come to dive with me beneath the ocean waves, and we can look to see what the light is pointing us to.

Upon a hill dressed with cedar, fir and spruce, overlooking a lake of blue, my pets and I walk the many trails in search of adventure. There are bears and cougars here, and we see evidence of their presence. We will rest awhile soon under one of the many trees.

This small group of cabins in Kirkenes featuring large windows is often used by travelers who hope to get a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis while staying warm. Another fun attraction besides aurora viewing is the Kirkenes Snowhotel which is rebuilt from fresh snow every year. This small town is located in northeastern Norway, close to the borders of Finland and Russia.
