I am called a silverback because the hairs on my back are white, which happens after my twelfth birthday. Being a silverback has a lot of responsibility! Not only do I protect my family, I also make all the decisions on where to go for dinner (no junk food for my family!) and settle disputes and squabbles between everyone. Our family group is called a troop, and it consists of me, several adult females and their offspring. The infants stay with their momma constantly for the first five months of their lives, and the momma stays close to me so I can protect them from things that may harm them. Once they are a little older they begin to wander a little bit (but not too far from my watchful eye). By the age of six, they are weaned and make their own nest to sleep in separate from their mother. An adult male sometimes stays in the family instead of searching out other single females and forming their own troop. These males are called blackbacks and help me by providing back-up protection for the troop.
