Scaredy Cat is dressed up with a nice new bow for his collar but isn't sure what the occasion is. Kaida explains to her friend that they are preparing to celebrate Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, which this year starts at sundown on December 6th. It is an important holiday in the Jewish faith, where Jews all around the world commemorate the miracle of the one-day supply of oil miraculously lasting eight days according to stories passed down from many generations. This festival lasts for 8 nights and each night, a candle is lit on a special menorah (candle holder) that is referred to as a "hanukkiyah". Music is played throughout the holiday and delicious treats such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jam-filled donuts) are made. Children are often given Hanukkah gelt (Yiddish for "money") and you can even find chocolate gelt!! Children are also seen often playing with a dreidel, which is a four-sided spinning top.
