Autism Acceptance

lisa
Scaredy Cat had a very important visit with his doctor today and finally learned why he gets nervous and upset so easily. He was told that he has something called "Autism Spectrum Disorder". He didn't know what that meant and his doctor told him that this is a disorder that affects how a pet acts and interacts with others, communicates, and learns. The doctor spent a lot of time explaining what ASD is and that many on the spectrum lead normal lives. He told him that as more is learned about ASD, those with ASD are becoming more accepted in society and pets are not as afraid to be around them. The doctor made some wonderful suggestions that would enable Scaredy Cat to adjust more easily. He taught him about coping skills to help him when he is very stressed. They found a little fidget toy that Scaredy Cat could play with to help when he feels the need to "stim". Then the doctor suggested that Scaredy Cat might benefit from a service dog. He's gone to a special pet organization that trains dogs to help those that have special needs and has brought home a service dog to try out. If they are a good fit with each other, this sweet dog will become useful in Scaredy Cat's life when things get tough. A couple of his friends have come to see his new pet. Bob has a large dog biscuit and Sir W thinks a nice hot cup of coffee might make the dog a happy dog. Scaredy Cat is so thankful that his friends are so accepting of him and that they aren't afraid to be his friend.

This week we are talking about Autism Awareness. Specifically, we want to focus on acceptance. Just like anypet that is "happy and healthy", those that have special needs due to ASD want to be accepted in society and in life. Many with ASD are capable of being a very productive member of society - they have jobs and families and can do most things you or I can - they just have different ways of doing some things and different coping skills. For this week's art challenge - show how being a little different is ok and that it's totally acceptable to be a little different.
