Bird Day
Scaredy Cat Today is Bird Day (May 4th) and Bob said, what better way to celebrate it than visiting the Bird Park!! As a shy cat, Scaredy Cat was reluctant at first but he has Bob with him, so finally give it a go. He was wondering...What is Bird Day? After doing a little research, this is what he found: Charles Almanzo Babcock, Oil City, Pennsylvania Superintendent of Schools, established the first Bird Day in 1894. It was also the first holiday in the United States dedicated to the celebration of birds (National Bird Day celebrated on January 5th). Babcock founded the day, observed annually on May 4th, to advance bird conservation as a moral value. Well...unlike the "typical" feline, he's not into eating birds (unless it's something like fried chicken or pan-roasted quail) so he can totally get into bird conservation. What a complete shock it is when he reads that according to the U.S. census, more Americans watch birds than play baseball and American football combined! Talk about a reason to try a new hobby! Scaredy Cat and Bob find an empty bench nearby and go sit down while discussing what they could do to celebrate the day of their feathered friends and neighbors. They think about doing a study on a few varieties of birds that tend to be found in similar habitats - making notes on their similarities and differences. They can visit a local aviary where birds are in a confined space much larger than a birdcage that allow birds to have much more freedom and space to fly around. Scaredy Cat isn't quite sure he could do that - all those birds flying around his head and maybe even dropping bird poo on his head and fur. He shudders at the thought. You can't help wonder what they will decide to do!!
This week, it's all about birds birds birds!! It's said that there are approximately 10,000 species of birds, while there it's also been stated that there are actually twice that number. Either way - that's a lot of different birds in existence!! Are you a bird lover? One of Scaredy Cat's hooman friends has a home aviary in her back yard and is treated to bird song throughout the day. Do you think you might want to build your own back yard aviary? Some things you might want to do as you celebrate birds are: build a birdhouse and paint it with bright colors (don't forget to add a little dish for seeds and small fruit pieces. Why not take a walk on a local nature trail and bring a bag or two of trail mix (without any chocolate) that contains nuts, seeds and even halved grapes! There are lots of books you can read such as Maya Angelou's book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"; or one of the many guides to birds. If you love all sorts of critters and creatures, why not consider adopting a bird? Locate a bird rescue organization and adopt one of the birds they have on hand. Dogs and cats aren't the only animals that are rescued and looking for a furever home. There are so many things you could do to celebrate our feathered friends!!
