Scaredy Cat Scaredy Cat and JJ went to Bob's place this week. He was always at Scaredy Cat's so he felt it was time for them to visit him. As a good host, Bob served them drinks and snacks while they watch some shows on TV and chat. Bob notices that Scaredy Cat was totally engrossed in the documentary about penguins on TV, so he walked to his window to see what the squirrels in his yard were up to. After the documentary was over, while they were enjoying their drinks and snacks, Scaredy Cat said "I truly enjoyed that documentary just now. I think penguins are fascinating. I saw that you're looking out the window just now. What were you looking at?” Bob replied "Squirrels. I just love watching them scurrying around the yards and trees. I just remembered that January 21st is “Squirrel Appreciation Day”. Wouldn't it be fun to do some art on them at the community center?" "What a coincidence! “Penguin Awareness Day” is on the 20th. That was why I wanted to watch the documentary earlier. I would love to create some art on those cuties myself", Scaredy Cat replied. "Hold on! Doesn’t the Chinese Lunar New Year fall on January 22nd this year? Wow!! We have so much to celebrate!" exclaimed Bob. "Do you know what else that comes after that? It's Australia Day on January 26th" Scaredy Cat said proudly as he remember his Australian friend telling him about it just last week. "What a great week it will be indeed" said Bob as he welcomed any excuses to celebrate.
*Penguin Awareness Day, (January 20th), not to be mistaken for World Penguin Day (April 25th) is a great opportunity to learn about and appreciate one of the few natives of Antarctica. Did you know? Penguins are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, the Falkland Islands, and the Galapagos Islands. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos. They are also the only bird that can swim but not fly.
*Squirrel Appreciation Day gives you the chance to enjoy and appreciate your tree-climbing, nut-gathering neighborhood squirrels. This January 21 holiday is held in mid-winter when food sources are scarce for squirrels and other wildlife. Sure, squirrels spent all fall gathering and “squirreling” away food. So, give them an extra special treat today to supplement their winter diets. When you think about it, mid-winter is the best time to appreciate squirrels. In the winter they provide a little entertainment. According to Christy Hargrove, the founder, “Celebration of the event itself is up to the individual or group — anything from putting out extra food for the squirrels to learning something new about the species.”
*The Chinese New Year holiday is celebrated by billions of people around the world. The date for the Chinese New Year changes every year. This year it falls on January 22nd. In Chinese astrology, each year is represented by an animal. The cycle is twelve years, with a different animal each year. According to their calendar, this year will be the year of the Rabbit. Also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year, the Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in Chinese culture. It is celebrated with festivities, fireworks, brightly colored lights, special meals with family, and gift giving.
*Australia Day is a national holiday in Australia, celebrating national pride and culture, and an opportunity to recognize and enjoy accomplishments. Many Aussies, as they are fondly called, use this day to explore and learn more about their national identity and culture. Creation of Australia Day was promoted by the Native Australian Association. This holiday was first celebrated on January 26, 1935. It wasn’t until 1994 that it became a national public holiday.
