International Polar Bear Day
Scaredy Cat Today we find Scaredy Cat, JJ and Bob visiting the zoo for the upcoming International Polar Bear Day Exhibit on February 27th. Bob got so excited about going that they decided to make an early trip. Bob was explaining to Scaredy Cat that there are an estimated 26,000 polar bears in the world that the International Union for Conservation of Nature has deemed the polar bear a vulnerable species when a polar bear cub happened upon them on their side of the fence. Scaredy Cat didn't know what to think about that because momma bear was right behind them. JJ gave Scaredy Cat a gentle nudge to let him know everything’s ok. Bob leaned in nervously to the cub and asked Scaredy Cat "should we pick him up and put him on the other side of the fence"? Scaredy Cat said "uh, I don't think we should touch it no matter how cute it is. We should definitely contact the zookeeper, so we don't endanger ourselves also". Just then, the zookeeper gnome appeared and said "I will take the 'lil fella’ back to its momma. The visitors should not touch the animals or go inside their enclosures. We practice safety first". Scaredy Cat let out a sigh and was relieved that he appeared when he did, because he knows what kind of shenanigans Bob gets himself into. Once the cub was safe with its momma, Bob went on discussing all he knew about the polar bears in the world. While he rambled on, the three of them went on to get some hot cocoa to warm up afterwards.
Some more interesting facts about polar bears is that the hibernating moms go 8 months without a meal and start a new family about every 3 years! Polar Bears also can travel up to 19 miles a day for several days and under all that thick fur, they have jet black skin. One more fact is that cubs weigh just over 1 pound, and an adult male can weigh more than 1700 pounds! To observe International Polar Bear Day, this week our art challenge will be all about polar bears. Perhaps your pets will go to the zoo or hoomans will watch some documentaries on polar bears? Or maybe your pets will visit the library to read more about them. There is also a PBI Polar Bear tracker at https://polarbearsinternational.org/ for you to follow. We look forward to all your creative scenes with polar bears this week.
