| | Have you ever seen such a rare creature as I am? I live in the Great Bear Rainforest. Legend has it that when the world started to turn green when the glaciers that had gripped the land for so long finally started to thaw, the black bears living in my neck of the woods were privileged ever afterwards to have every tenth bear born being my beautiful, creamy white colour, as a reminder of those long-ago icy times. Every winter, I curl up in my cosy den, wrap a paw around my dark nose, I shut my brown eyes tight and hibernate peacefully until it’s springtime again. I’m very hungry when I emerge, I can tell you! I feast on anything, from fish to berries, mushrooms and hazelnuts – but I’m a gentle creature and promise not to eat you. But I might growl as fiercely as I can and chase you up a tree if you ever insult me by calling me a polar bear! |
