Who can resist a face like this? Looking up at you with sweet lil puppy dog eyes in standard bulldog stance. You just have to give in. Feed me it says. Treat me! Maybe some scones or jelly babies?

It is really hard being this cute but sometimes I must get up and strut my stuff. I tuck away my monocle and my tea and let everyone know how adorable I am waddling past them letting my cute lil tail wag in their face. A quick smile and I know I am certain to get a treat.

Nope! Not telling you. My lips are sealed. I did nothing. Or if something did happen maybe blame it on the cat. You cannot trick me into saying anything. Only I know the truth. You know you wanna trust this sweet innocent face. Really, nothing to see back there. Nothing at all…

Oh, won’t you come out to play? Join me swooping through the air and frolicking in the fields from dawn to dusk! I may look just a teensy bit scary, but I have a heart of gold. Not like my ancient ancestors of Wales, of course! My name in Welsh is Y Ddraig Goch, the red dragon—or strictly speaking, that says “the dragon red”, but no matter! Have a look at the flag of Wales; you’ll see my great-great-great—too many to count!—uncle on there, looking terribly fierce! My goodness, you wouldn't want to upset him! I have lots of handy skills. You should see me make toast—I just hold up a slice of bread and breathe fire on it! Mind you, it sometimes ends up completely incinerated—oh crumbs!

Hummmm… Bzzzzzzzz… If you are outside cat-napping on the porch and hear what sounds a bit like a bumblebee, have no fear; it’s only a little hummingbird. I’ve just stopped by to have a few sips of the perfectly sweetened sugar-water in the feeder. Thank you for not putting any coloring in it. I prefer it that way; nectar in flowers is clear and it is better for my health to have a natural diet. Due to the rapid beating of my wings I am in constant need of sugar for energy and I have the unique ability to turn nectar into fuel within thirty minutes.
I like my sugar-water to be clear but that doesn’t mean I don’t like color in other places, like my beautiful feathers. My pastel coloring is in beautiful shades of a sunrise, ranging from the golden glow of the sun to the soft pinks in the clouds of a morning sunrise. And I just love the way my feathers look iridescent in the sunlight. My beauty goes much deeper though. I am a very thankful bird and I will remember where your feeder is after my long migratory flight back from Central America. I will stay in your yard all summer and even bring my babies to see you and show them how nice you are.

Who’s the baby? ME! And everyone oohs and ahhs over me, talkin’ to me, asking me things like do I know I’m cute! OF COURSE! And do I want some treatsies? UH, YEAH, what kid doesn’t want treats! I won’t grow up to be as big as my river horse cousins, but I will still be able to play American football for the PNF Giants if I want! Mum says I have plenty of time before I think about that stuff. That in the meantime I should play real football (soccer). I am rather fast, you know! When mom comes by with a mouthful of that nasty river hay, I zoom to the right and zag to the left to avoid that All I need now is a ball, and I can score!
