Woof! Pleased to meetcha. I am a Cairn Terrier, aye—and I am hardy and fierce, but I still don’t want to run into that nasty witch. So, maybe you and I—along with any pets that want to join in—can go for a nice amble through the woods instead of any strange adventures involving cyclones and fences, and houses dropping out of the sky. What do you think? You are not prone to having strange and realistic dreams, are you?

I fear I have gotten a bad rap, and I would like to tell you about myself if you have the time. I am a monkey—this is true, and it is also true that I fly—what is not true is that I am wicked or mean, or like to scare little dogs—or little people wearing denim. I am not that fond of witches, they tend to be quite self-absorbed, but I hear there is a lovely witch who lives just over that mountain. I love fruit, any kind of fruit can turn me into a puddle of cuddly mush. So, you see, if you listen to gossip, you will get only the bad stuff and none of the good stuff. Let’s hang out and go get some fresh fruit to eat, and you can tell me about yourself.

I am just a baby owl, clinging to a branch and surveying the surrounding land with my enormous eyes. What do I spy? A mouse, but I am too small to go play with a mouse. A butterfly dancing in the breeze, but I cannot fly well enough—with my baby wings—to play with a butterfly. A bird, soaring high, but I can barely fly up to this branch, so I cannot play and soar with a bird. Who can I play with? I see a worm inching toward me. Hello little worm, can you be my friend? You don’t soar or dance in the air or dash about on the ground, you are slow, and that is the perfect friend for me.

I am just little and still learning all about being an elephant. Today in Elephant School, we learned about the trunk. The trunk is like a nose and hand/paw combined. When I am fully grown, my trunk will have 40,000 muscles and be able to pick up over 770 pounds. Right now, I tend to trip over my trunk a lot—it is not so easy to learn to use my trunk gracefully. I can suck up water and put my trunk in my mouth to have a drink or just spray the water all over my back—feels so good. I can pick things up—we practiced this in class—it is not easy either—my trunk wants to do the opposite of what I am trying to do. The teacher says we have to practice as homework.

One thing I really want to learn is how to trumpet just like my grandparents—I love that sound—it is used as a warning, or if an elephant is excited, and it sounds so cool. Right now, I can only manage a rusty squeak, but my teacher says, in time, I will master trumpeting just like all the older elephants do. Oh, oh, and I can walk underwater—if I hold my trunk up high, I can breathe with no problems, but right now, I don’t even walk very well—I tend to stumble, and that trunk that trips me up makes it hard to remember to hold my trunk up and place my feet carefully. So much to learn.
